    What does this thing do?

    I'm quite curious about things on the Prado and there's not really a lot of detail in the handbook. I thought I'd start a topic where I (and others) can ask about bits and pieces they find on their car and they don't know what they are. I haven't been able to find a topic similar to this so I hope it's not a duplication. We'll need to post photos and specify the model and where the item is located. For example - what does this thing do? -



    I have a 2008 Auto GXL Deisel. This object is located on top of the dash directly in front of the driver (drives me crazy that I see it everytime I'm driving the car but don't know what it is). I think it might be a sensor of some kind but not sure what it does or whether it's active for my model.

    Ejector seat button??


    I'd say sensor for auto head lights on other models? (Only because VE Commodore has one there)

    Looks like its just a blanking plug in our case.

      Auto headlights i would say, otherwise GPS antenna, which I think is elsewhere?

          Good question.

          Is it the receiver for the on-key remote?
          Is it a blank for the flashing light for the alarm on the Grande models?
          Is it where one of the War of the Worlds machines has embedded itself waiting for the big day?

            My other car has a sensor on the dash that detects strong sunlight and tells the climate control to compensate accordingly (according to it's manual), but I never actually located the said sensor. But this thing on the Prado dash has had me wondering too.

                Once someone said its to do with the climate control and its also wired to the outside temp sensor.

                  BINGO!!! according to the workshop manual it's the "Airconditioning Solar sensor" EWD595E, page 56

                    It's a sensor which forms part of the climate control system and allows the system to measure and regulate for the effect of sun and exterior climatic effects. Same as most other late model cars with climate control (or at least that option). You will notice dash mats leave a hole to ensure it doesn't interfere with the sensors operation.
