  • Prado console issue

Thankx to all re past advice
We are the owners of a new diesel job BUT we have a cosmetic issue and wonder if we are the only ones

After 3 months of careful use
The central console (where gear change is) has had something spilt and the silver edge has black spots (where the "silver" has disappeared. The central black console has now a pit like a cigarette burn (there was a small dried substance-when I rubbed made a small hole). The silver edge is worn off where a leather bag has rubbed.

Problem is , no kids, no passenger and the only drinks ever in vehicle is water and lemonade...

    any ideas

    Re: Prado console issue

sounds like something nasty has gotten onto it (the cigarette like hole). On ours the passenger side silver area is severly discoloured but that has been due to things (maps, handbag!) rubbing against it. Drivers side is fine. In years to come that piece of the console is going to be rare at wreckers!

Same on ours, silver rubbed through from handbag on passenger side and also UHF microphone cord on drivers side.

Also the black part of the console has been polished shiney in places from things like GPS power cords etc rubbing on it.

I made the mistake of hanging a baseball cap over the transfer lever for a month or so. Took it off to wear it one day and all the silver had been rubbed off underneath it.

Needless to say I don't hang anything on it anymore - not very resilient that particular part of the furniture

You know it might be worth getting onto a spare set now and putting away for resale time

This appears to be a common problem. Both my brother and I have the same "wear" marks on the passenger side. Next time (new car) I will remove the panels and spray them with a clear coat of paint, should make them last longer!

            Cheers

I had to buy a new pass side silver panel, at $90.00 they are not cheap for about 50 cents worth of plastic.

My Prado is about 4 weeks old now.
After its first trip up to Cervantes last week I noticed some of the silver had worn off on the passengers side. I can't recall anything that would have been rubbing against it though.
Seems very fragile to me. Not what I would have expected from any car.

Geez $90.00 are you kidding!!! Still, I shouldn't be surprised with it being a Toyota genuine part. The idea will definitely be to get some spares off a wrecked Prado and then paint them up with a decent looking paint. Certainly seems to be what people notice when looking at used Prado's. Heck, I noticed it when I was looking at Prado's. That silver coating is so atomically thin it's almost unbelievable.

If you bought every part separately and then assembled the whole car you would probably have to pay around $150 - 200,000 for the car.
I've got concerns about the cloth arm rests on the front doors. My is now an orangey - brown colour so that the interior of my car blends in with the local landscape. I'm worried I'm going to wear these out.

Surely if you went to a wreckers though you could pick up some of this stuff cheaper than the spare parts dept at a Toyota dealer? I was thinking you could pick up a few of these high wearing parts and simply replace as needed. I once saw a wrecked Prado in a wreckers yard with a sign up saying to make an offer for spares or something similar. Was working at the time and couldn't stop in, but that would be the go.

I wonder if the old one could be sanded very very lightly with some very fine wet and dry and sprayed with some of that Nokia Silver style paint some places have. Not sure how close the match would be or how well the spray would adhere to the plastic.

                              Re: Prado console issue

On our new Prado we noticed the silver wearing off after the mic curly cord rubbed on it. This was only after a few days of touring.

I covered the most exposed silver bits on the centre console over with black Gaffa tape to protect it ( the proper cloth stuff. ) It looks fairly neat. Hopefully when I take the tape off off the silver won't come with it !

I agree though the silver paint is very thin you need to be very careful with it - what is with that ??- never had this problem in any other car.
Worth a few of us pushing it to Toyota as a quality issue ?
                              Cheers, Wayne
