  • Squealing/whining noise at front when on right hand lock

    Hi all

I am hoping someone can help me out here. The noise occurs when on almost full lock to the right. I took it to Toyota but they could not identify it  and said if gets any worse bring it in earlier than the scheduled service which is November. The Prado is a 2007 GX model.

      Hi Daryl,

I have found that a squeal under full lock is usually caused by the power steering belt, check
      belt tension.

I would have imagined though that it would happen on both locks though and that Toyota would have
      picked it up?

Do you feel any feedback through the steering wheel, if so then will be the power steering unit,
maybe wheel travel stop needs adjusting.

      Cheers

There is no such adjustment... steering hits stops and pump bypasses.

Re: Squealing/whining noise at front when on right hand lock

          Hi Daryl,

I had a similar thing happen to me on the weekend. I wend through some mud and a couple of minutes later noticed a squealing/whining noise. When I slowed almost to a stop it was like a horrible whine which would cycle on and off in conjunction with the rotation of the wheel. It was like a dry bearing kind of sound.

A mate drove next to me and said the sound was coming from the passengers side front wheel. Similar to you, when I steered right, the sound increased and when I steered left it went away completely. Eventually, I jacked the wheel up and gave it a twist. I could faintly hear a similar sound. I started prodding and poking around the inside of the wheel looking for something touching the disc, rim or axle and noticed that there is a fairly thin guard plate on the inner side of the disc and it seemed pretty flexible. It was also pretty packed with mud. Anyway, after giving it a bit of a wobble and gently pushing it away from the disc, I could no longer hear the sound and it did not return.

Not really sure but perhaps the force of the mud pushed the flexible plate closer to the disc and then the forces of the front end pushing one way against the force of the wheel pushing back cause some contact when steering right. It may not be your problem but worth a 2 minute look.

          Good luck

            Hi Leigh and Sterny

Sorry I have taken so long to get back to you but I have been away. No it is not the belts  and no not caused by your suggestion Sterney . I will do a detailed investigation of it next week prior to maybe taking it back to toyota.

            regards Daryl

I had a similar issue a month or so ago, i thought the noise was coming from the front end, would only hear a whining noise on full lock right and full lock left, turns out it was coming from the rear of the car, booked it for an early service and Toyota replaced the rear diff oil and the noise has now gone, strange.....
