    Re: Stolen 120s

Toyota service centres are a joke. I now do not trust them or their staff. I forgot to mention before that i also had my ali bar stolen 12months before the car and yes also just after a service. Spoils the prado experience that for sure.

We do this for the mine vehicle in the form of an isolation switch on the bullbar (mine site requirement) we have all sorts of troubles with the 120's and the hiluxes espcially the new 150 series with the push button start. These new cars definitly do not like to be isolated
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

What exactly are you isolating chester, is it just an in line switch in the Positive or negative from the battery or something more complex?

I have details on 5 Prado Grandes stolen in my area in a month. [Ryde, Putney, Gladesville]. if you have friends with Prados in this area I would be telling them.
Good advice on a separate alarm. One of the owners was going to install an alarm on the next service visit, i guess they thought they would get in early.

              Re: Stolen 120s

I had a Morris Mini which I swapped the mechanical fuel pump to an electric one. I setup a switch on the power wire and hid it in the car. At night I would turn it off. If it ever was stolen, they might get out of the driveway, but not much further.

Can't see why something similar couldn't be used in the petrol model at least.
It's not a lie, if you believe it.

                Re: Stolen 120s

Thing is, if these crooks want your car, they will take it.

Best option is to slow them down by introducing delay:

                * Secure the ECU, making it difficult to remove, disconnect and/or bypass
                * 3rd party immobiliser
                * Hidden killswitch on critical, but unexpected component (so their evil minds won't find it easily)

Strikes me that the hidden killswitch might not be such a bad idea. There must be dozens of targets that will shut down the ECU?

                Suggestions?

The driver is a critical yet unexpected component right? Have the kill switch wired up to an ignition coil hidden under the driver seat. Run a HT cable inside the seat, bare the last 6 inches of wire, and fan it out behind the seat cover about halfway up the back of the seat. Switch the coil from one of the trigger pulses for one of the spark plugs. If the engine is cranked with the kill switch in the wrong position a few kilovolts enter the body through the lower back around the kidneys and exit from whatever point is convenient (a similar fanned ground wire could be placed in the bum part of the seat to be sure of a good ground). Perhaps not a kill switch, but will at least be a severe pain switch.

Or did you mean something to kill the engine?

Kill switches wont stop a tilt tray - if they want it bad enough, they'll take it anyway they can.

Yep. That's what insurance is for

I think the point of the kill switch is to defeat the crims who walk around with replacement ECU's etc and can effectively hotwire this car in a few minutes.

Agreed however the way the law is written if a thief is electrocuted whilst trying to steal your car via a mantrap you will be charged.

Sorry guys - I didn't intend to turn it into a discussion of the legalities of a mantrap, was more a tongue in cheek re-interpretation of the term "kill switch".

FTR I very much doubt something like I suggested would be capable of killing, although it would cause a world of pain. I worked with an apprentice once who did something very similar to this as a practical joke in an old holden.
