Got this respone from Toyota today, only took 2 weeks:

    Thank you for your response.

    Fording depth is at 700mm.

With relation to the clutch, It is difficult for any manufacturer to comment on the life expectancy of any component.
Each part in a vehicle is subject to many conditions over which Toyota have no control, i.e., environment, road conditions, driver technique, maintenance, etc.
These items may have and adverse effect on a motor vehicle and, of course at some stage in vehicles life components will need replacing and/or repairs.

As per the owners manual, if driven through flooded road conditions be sure to have your Toyota Dealership check the following:
    • Brake function
    • Changes in quantity and quality of oil and fluid used for the engine, transmission, transfer, differentials, etc.
    • Lubricant condition for the propeller shaft, bearings and suspension joints (where possible), and the function of all joints, bearings etc.

    Thank you,

I don't like how they worded this "As per the owners manual, if driven through flooded road conditions "
So if driven off road is it covered?

Re: Fording depth and what to look out for?

Talk about a run around / political answer. I emailed the following last month:

        contactType: EMAIL TOYOTA
        topic: Vehicle information
comments: The wading depth for the 120 / 150 series Prado is 700mm. Is this correct? Is this because there is no snorkel fitted?

What if the water is muddy or has sand in it?
What if I change gears in this polluted water?
Will any of this affect my warranty?
Also how do you define normal wear and tear? For example, Toyota state costs that are not covered by the Toyota Warranty are:
The costs of regular maintenance servicing are not part of the Warranty. Labour, parts and lubricants used in a Scheduled Service, and replacement of worn parts such as spark plugs, filter, brake and clutch linings, or any other item that has been the subject of normal wear and tear is not covered."

If it?s normal wear and tear, how many km's should one get out of a clutch? 30,000km's, 100,000km's.
If this polluted water gets into the bell housing or into the axle or gearbox and causes extra wear, are we covered by warranty? Because these items sit below 700mm wading depth (maybe not the breather for the gearbox/transfer case - have to check).
I just finished watching a video about Prado?s 4x4 capabilities. What the vehicle is doing on the video is that covered by warranty?

Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated

And the reponse I got was this:

Thank you for your email, I have attached the wading depth advice below for you as per the Prado owners Manual, as for clutch life expectancy, Toyota do not put time frames on components, the warranty of a vehicle is 3 years or 100,000 kms which ever comes first.

As for pricing and servicing costs and procedures please contact your local Toyota dealer for further information.

Thank you for contacting Toyota Customer Experience Centre

I have emailed them back the questions they failed to answer

Re: Fording depth and what to look out for?

Got a reply not too long ago from Toyota:

          Good afternoon
Yes as they off road driving concerns these may affect your warranty.

          So I have replied:

So the video on the Toyota website showing the off road capabilities of the Prado is misleading, i.e. not covered by warranty is we do what is on the video?

It will be interesting to see what their reponse is.

            well this is it:

Please read your warranty & service booklet or contact your selling dealer service centre for what you may and may not be cover under warranty.

This is not a warranty office it is customer relations and we are not technically trained, our dealers are our technical service centres

            Have a good afternoon

A bunch of us crossed the Warren River where it meets the beach in Pemberton WA. My mate was cacking himself at my bent up front plate. I had the last laugh though. His completely detached from his 100s and floated out to see never to be seen again! Probably screwed to a scooter in Bali by now.

                Good Evening All,

Got my Diff Breather Kit from Piranha for the two diff's last year. Rear Diff ONLY had a nipple and front Diff already had an extension, but NOT high enough for my liking. Extended them both as far up as i could in the engine bay.
Many deep river crossings later ( Big River & The High Country ), NO problems so far ( Minor - Idler pulley squeaks a bit every now and then ).
After the 140,000 km service last week, there was No mention of the Idler pulley being noisy ( NOT so happy with that )
Just want to know If I need to get another set for the Gearbox & Transfer Case ?
If so, where are they located ?

                Thank You,

                Noel

check the floor bungs from underneath. Mine were not seated properly and we needed a big old dry out. I ended up using a healthy dose of silastic. Details are here http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic....st=0&sk=t&sd=a scroll down a bit

Re: Fording depth and what to look out for?

Whilst in Bamaga Cape York in June 2010 there was a 120 waiting for a new radiator.
He had a Bra on, was in 2nd low, was towing an Ultimate camper and was slow moving.
What he did not know was the water had picked on the Viscous fan blade and the water force had turned the blade to such an extent it sliced through the Radiator in an arc.
Consequentlt by the time he had gone from the water and onto dry land the Rad ingredients has gone and hey presto he was stuck.
$1000 later (lucky he was with RACQ total care) he landed back in Bamaga.
The RACQ fella there keeps in business every year replacing 80-90 rads per year!
His suggestion prior to entering the water is:
Have a few holes drilled into some of the Fan's blades and use a Strap to hold it still so wont turn.

Re: Fording depth and what to look out for?

As indicated before my 2009 Prado has a front diff breather that extends up to level with the base of the car battery. That transfer and gear box breathers are connected and terminate half way up the bell housing. Just need to extend it another 150 - 300mm.

The rear diff has the breather cap on the diff itself. It makes you wonder why Toyota have extended diff and gearbox/transfer case breathers but none for the rear diff. Anyway I'm going to extend the rear diff breather up along the fuel filler pipe which makes it just above the wheel arch.

Just been watching 'Nolan's Crossing' up Cape York on YouTube. Besides water getting in the drain holes on the doors, where else can it get inside the cabin?
Obviously if you go deep enough it will get in between the door and the window.
What about the rear tail lights.

For those that has suffered the misfortune of getting wet feet, did you notice where the water was getting in first?

So after getting to the tip yesterday we have been thinking about water entry into 120 series. We both have had various amounts come in through the back doors.
So after inverting and sealing the drain plugs in the doors and floor, sealing the doors with gaffer tape along the outside and around the interior trims, checking all the floor bolts, and making sure the bungs under the carpet and under the rear door footsteps are all there we cannot find where so much water can enter so quickly. While crossing the Pascoe the rear doors were not above the trim panels and were only in the water for around 30 seconds. At no time was the vehicle stationary.
So if anyone has any insights it would help greatly as we are a bit mystified!

Good to hear you made the tip Bryce.

When we went to the Cape the only time we got water in the cab was in Nolans, when we got bogged, so not sure where you had issues.

How deep was the Pascoe (assuming you mean on the Portlands road) it was about knee deep when we went through, but plenty of other much deeper and just as long including Logans creek which was about as wide as the Pascoe and water coming over the bonnet.

                                Pasoce crossing

                                Logans Creek

Maybe you have a crook doorseal?
