  • Prado 120 Gross Vehicle front Axle weight over the limit

    Hey guys,
    Working out the weight of add-on's to the front of the Prado and had a bit of a shock with the front gross weight. If I understand correctly and have calculated reasonably, assuming only the addition of the Toyota Sovereign Bullbar and Toyota Winch cradle, full tanks of fuel and two passengers (assuming 60% distribution to the front axle) will already push the front of the car over the front Gross load limit. I assume I have made a mistake?

    Front kerb load (estimate) 1140
    Net weight of bar and cradle 41
    Reserve tank (say 50%) 37
    Say 60% weight of passengers 96
    ------------
    Total 1314

    Front gross load (estimate) 1290

    If this is correct then there must be a lot of overloaded vehicles out there?

    Looks like I wont be adding the winch on !

    Any one able to confirm if this is true?

      Definatly an eye opener

      Not sure if they are axle limits or suspension limits. I suspect suspension limits perhaps, so not such an issue with upgraded suspension. I am pretty surprised that the car could be over the front axle limit before it drives out of the Toyota door (with Toyota Bull bar and Cradle - potential insurance issue?).
      I will get the car weighed.

        i have a 120 decked out
        it's over that weight you said

        so i went and found a stock standard 120 GXL D4D auto
        fuel light was on , just us 2 in the front it weighed 1260 on the front axle and 1120 on the rear axle 2380 overall
        stock std with not even an extra bolt fitted

        mine on the other hand loaded going to the cape was lets just say i'm not sure where 600kg could go , and i never had any issues, still did 11.5L/100 on the highway and looked just like every other prado i parked next to

        i have a 150 now as well and having looked at all the components side by side, i bet the front from a 150 would fit the 120 , and they have a 1490 front axle weight and the same 1800 rear axle weight and have the max rate of 2990

        you can get an upgrade of the gvm from 2900 to 3090 (sum of the front & rear axle weights) just 190kg

        my engineer said if i used an axle from another vehicle with higher load rating he could lift it to that new load

        but your right Toyota messed up or who ever governs the rating applied
        the 200 series is rated at 3350 here in OZ over seas it is 3800 (someone took the 450kg out for the OZ market) now you can get it back by paying an engineer lots of $$ for something it's built for
        the fortuner can tow more than the prado
        even the kia of the same vintage has a bigger tow rating than the prado

        do the sums backwords 2900gvm - 8 passengers @ 70kg = 560kg = 2340 - 150 for fuel = 2190 ( a std gxl weighs 2350 )

          Unless you take it a weighbridge, it's all guesswork:





          The first photo is 1/2 fuel and prior to Sovereign bar, winch cradle, bash plates and sliders.
          The second photo is full fuel, fridge, rear drawers and gear for a weekend trip.

            I can see that photos are an issue on this forum

            I have a 2004 V6 Grande 5speed auto.

            The first photo is 1/2 fuel and prior to Sovereign bar, winch cradle, bash plates and sliders:
            1080 kg front axle, 1060 kg rear axle, 2140 kg total including driver.

            The second photo is full fuel, fridge, rear drawers and gear for a weekend trip:
            1140kg front axle, 1380 kg rear axle, 2520 kg total including driver.

              Yep, with factory fitted bullbar and winch the front axle is over the max weight

                Thanks for the responses everyone.
                I know there are vehicles over the technical limt out on the roads, but shocked that Toyota dont hesitate to add the extras without a word of warning. They must be pretty comfortable that the Prado can take the over limit weight?

                  Just an update. Got the car weighed today. Both tanks full, some gear in the back, and me standing on the front weighbridge (automated unit, no option to to step off).
                  Results: Front 1.16T, Rear 1.2T, total 2.36T (I would only be around 70kg). Leaves me some margin for the front, but not much.
