Chalk me up as a filter marker as well. If I'm being charged for it, it had better happen! Never had an issue though so far, marked filters always gone when I pick my car up. Always wonder what the workshop guys must think when they see paint pen dabbed on the filters they're pulling off. 8)

My Mechanic did his apprenticeship with a Toyota dealer, when the tradesman in the next bay left, they had to clear out his work bench, found 42 brand new Camry fuel filters hidden under the bench. Apparently they are a pain in the arse to replace, so hed just hide it under the bench!!!

I bet the dealer didn't try to contact the last 42 camry owners that this guy serviced!!

It's unfortunate, but some dealers run a fairly tight time budget on the guys.

End of the day not sure I'd be getting my car serviced by someone I didn't trust, I like the fact that I talk to my mechanic every time I drop off and pick up my car, and anything that needs doing thats not normal hes on the phone letting me know.

My Father in Law bought a new fourby (from a different manufacturer) a few years ago. He is a diesel mechanic by trade and fairly meticulous read pedantic operator. He was reading his service book and the new multi valve motor required a very light oil, the specific grade eludes me now, but it is what you would put in a modern petrol motor. He calls the dealers and asked the service manager what oil he put in it. The response was a diesel oil with the complete wrong specs. When He pointed this out the service manager would not beleive him. John drives down there shows him the specs and demended that they there and then changed his oil and filters. He had to stand on his digs and a fight ensued but in the end they did it for him.

Makes you wonder, factory trained technicians, what a load of !@#$. Must have gotten their trade certificates from the Ponds Institute.

Re: I am glad I read the Service book first

I too am a filter marker. I have a 2008 D4D booked in for 40000 service tommorrow and just had a call from service dept to ask if i would like an AC deodourise and disinfect and a fuel injector treatment. The AC treatment not interested but i queried the injector treatment as the D4D issues are well known. Apparently the fuel injector treatment means removing the "inlet pipe and running a treatment solution through the manifold to clean it " They do nothing to the injectors so for $220 i declined. Has anybody else had this done or are there any benifits to it ?
I have just been under the prado and taken photos of the filters and diff plugs to see if they are touched. I have had no issues with the service dept but a mates service at the hands of another local dealer was shocking. Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: I am glad I read the Service book first

I had load of problems with Toyota from when I first purchased the vehicle to the point where they made fundamental mistakes time and time again and I was doing QA's post service (no, I am not mechanicaly savy). It got to the point where they did shoddy work to the car which left me stranded one 4WD trip. That resulted in a letter to the head of the company/franchise who owned all Toyota dealerships in the region detailing a list of issues and frustrations I experienced. Anyway, long story short I was offered extended warrranty.

I recently serviced my car at a local independent mechanic workshop; someone I originially found to do a blue slip (mechanical check for rego) for me. I could not beleive the detail he put into servicing of my vehicle not to mention items he did because he saw they needed attention; I could not beleive the pride in which this person took in doing a fairly simple service. Price for the service was probably half of that Toyota would have charged.

Anyway, I decided from now onwards I was not going to service the car at Toyota. Not only that, even if I were to purchase a new car I would still get a trusted independent mechanic to service the vehicle. My investment is far too valuable for a 1st/2nd year apprentice to hack to pieces!!!

I've used three Toyota Dealers in my time, and they have all let me down time and time again - I know go to a small 4wd shop where the owner is in touch with everything going on, and his boys are well supervised - I'm sure they're not at Toyota!!

Re: I am glad I read the Service book first

I had to spend some time in Brisneyland (a few years ago on family matters). At the time my Prado was on a lease arrangement, with all servicing required to be done at a Toyota dealer.

At home, I always got it serviced at the local dealer, with whom I had a fairly good relationship. Being away from home, I just booked the 20,000km service with the nearest Toyota dealer to where I was staying (north side of Brisbane). When I picked it up, I noticed that the main fuel filter had not been changed (the cost of which was factored into the service invoice). When I queried this, they said that they only do them every 40,000km. so, I asked them that by their logic, the oil filter should only be done every 20,000km, not 10,000? "Of course not" was the reply.

I advised my fleet company, and they were quite p!ssed off. They told me to get it changed when I get home, and they'll charge it back to the offending dealer in Brisbane (which I did).

I also wrote to both the Dealer Principal and Toyota head office expressing my concerns about the dealer network applying their own service standards in variance to what Toyota requires, but never received a reply from either.

make some stickers to put on the filters.... "Just checking to see if you change me"

That should get the mechanics attention.. he he.

I've got 9 thousand reasons to not trust anybody at the moment. I don't want to say too much because I am going through some legal processes, but I feel let down by "professionals" who I have trusted with my pride and joy

I've been on foot for three weeks now. I hope to get my car back in about a week or so, $9, 000 bucks later.

I look forward to sharing fully with you all one day.
