  • Clang a few meters into reversing

Hi, just under 3 months ago I bought an 07 GXL petrol 35,000 klms.

It has developed a real metalic clang a few meters into a reverse, only in reverse, distance till clang is variable - 1 meter to no more than 15 meters. Can be from stand still over night or simply reversing into a parking space at the shops.

I called the warranty dept at Toyota dealer and they say its normal for prado, is rear brake pads moving into new position with change in rotation. It can be a pretty damn loud clang and considering it wasnt there initailly quite concerning.

I called a 4WD specialist and they said they have worked on plenty of Prados with no reversing clang noise. I took it to an Automatic Trans specialist thinking it was in the trans and they found that the handbrake needed serious adjustment and RH rear brake needs work (not sure what that meant, maybe sticking calipers) and were fairly certain it was the brake pads making the noise but wothout stripping things down couldnt be certain.

They also said it has excessive gear noise coming from transfer case what ever that is.

Does any one else hear a clang? Any suggestions about gear noise from transfer case?

I am taking it into the dealer Tuesday (3 month warranty runs out wednesday )and if im going to get the runaround Id like to have some qualified opinion behind me.

    Cheers

What utter bull! What these so-called Toyota mechanics/service managers spruke at times never ceases to amaze me.

Never had a noise in reverse with either of my 2 Prados - manual with 165K and auto 35k. The only time the brakes ever make a noise is after a good wash and with the resultant rust that binds the pads until you go to move off - all perfectly normal.

I'd be saying "fix it and stop the noise/problem."

Mine does it sometimes. Only does it as I'm backing out of a friends driveway its the only time it does it. Must be the angle of his driveway or something. Haven't had time to investigate but it doesn't really bother me. Let us know if you find the cause.

Yep,mine does it too but have not looked into cause as it seems fine in all other areas.

Mine does it also, but it is only occacionally. To me it sounds like it is in the brakes somewhere. It is not too loud to bother me so I have not hunted it down YET!

The prado pads are a floating design style so there is some noise as the pads move as the direction of wheel travel changes, this will normally be noisier as it approaches service time then toyota will shove some grease in there to quiet then down
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

Yes to pads being the issue, oddly it was the front ones, nothing to do with the handbrake although it was way out of adjustment and causing other noises. The explaination was that lugs on the back of the pads keep the pads from moving around. The genuine pads lugs are too small and dont do the job unlike a generic brand whose lugs are the right size. They stuck a generic set in and complete silence ever since.

They said my concerns about noise from transfer case is coming from the brakes but thats crap. The sound is unaffected by applying the brakes while moving. The autotrans guys had it coming from the trans. I guess Ill have to put up with it as the warranty is no more.

              Thanks for all your input.

                Check for your letterbox.

That was the problem last time we had a noise whilst reversing.

                  look out. he has spoken.
this does occur. there is a tolerance between the brake cradle and the brake pads to allow the pads to slide.
if this is a little larger, than you will get this noise on change of direction.
so i'm sure someone knows what they are talking about out there

Re: Clang a few meters into reversing

My point is that "if it is normal" then why doesn't it happen to all Prados all the time?

Just like the time I was told my rear diff "groan" is caused by the bedding in fluid they use. If they use a bedding in fluid then why is it not mentioned in the service manual and why is there no mention of when it should be replaced with normal fluid? Bedding in fluid - what crap.

And the rattle from the front of my wife's Camry - "must be something loose in the fuel tank" they said. "How come the noise is coming from the front" I asked. Turned out to be worn bush on lower front suspension.

No wonder more and more people are flocking to other repairers to get their cars serviced.

there are some questionable people out there, including mechanic's, builders, plumbers, finance etc.
but you can't tar everyone with the same brush...

Re: Clang a few meters into reversing

Hey guys, its been a few weeks and I thought it worth giving an upodate. According to the Genuine Toyota dealer mechanic the reversing clang was an actual problem that needed fixing, solved by skimming the disks and using non genuine pads as previously described. He seemed like a nice guy (if not a little jaded from all the picky picky picky toyota owners out there) and in the end I felt he would have done a good job - this was contrary to my first impression of him over the phone as he laid out as many reasons as he could for it all being 'perfectly normal'. Anyway a week or so into the new pads I started getting brake sqeal. I would nornally have expected it to quiet down as the pads bed in instead it just got worse. I used the heat up the pads and brake hard method to remove glazing. Seemed to work for a day or so but it just came back. I now have a hell of a lot of black dust accumulating on my shiny mags. And oh joy the reversing clang is back......

Bottom line is I've ended up worse off. I think I'll just get some genuine pads and do it myself. My guess would be I'll find a good dose of silicone around cheap as chips brake pads.

Does anyone know of a really good mechinc around Adelaide SA that knows 120 prados.

                          Cheers
