    Re: Fuel tank breather maybe????

    interesting mod.
No harm in doing it, and could save you hassles down a track somewhere. probably not needed for tarmac shopping trolleys, but for us offroader types probly needed.

When I open my fuel filler cap(diesel) after driving, I get a rush of gasses out of the tanks.
So I would guess that valve would slowly let gasses/ pressure out (like over an hour or so after driving) and also let air in as fuel is used or cooled.

Or even as fuel/ gasses expand and contract during the day night hot cold cycle.

    good one.

    Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Just completed this mod also!!! Found my fuel tank breather CLOGGED with dirt - jammed open...
I could easily blow air though both ways - until i soaked the unit in water and cleared the obstruction!!!

      Went from this...

        Re: Fuel tank breather maybe????

Anyone confirmed if this is Diesel only yet?

I have to crawl back under mine to replace the breather I fitted to the rear diff - idiots at Enzed sold me a union and despite asking three times for them to confirm it was 1/8 BSP (which they did each time) it wasn't!!! Got it replaced today so while I'm under there I will have a look for the fuel tank breather and report back.

I'm surprised anyone went to the extent of removing it in the first place. The second post by MickL stated what it is. A check valve is a one way valve for air or fluids. :P

Mine was jammed with dirt and freely passed air both ways until i soaked it in a bucket and cleared the muck from inside the valve! Now it works as it should again, and moved to a new location to prevent it happening again...

Just to confirm for anyone interested, this breather isn't fitted on the Petrol version (well not on my 2006 GXL anyway). As Mick says, the line runs all the way to the charcoal canister.

                    Matt,

Taken your lead and finally had the time this afternoon to do the mod. Easy one to do and I managed to push the valve body to the very top. Although I couldn't get up the very top to secure it with a zip tie I locked it in place between the filler pipe and body firmly giving me maximum hight.

                    Here are some photos.

Note when re installing the valve there is an arrow and the word Tank so be sure you put it on correctly (see image below).

Hope this helps someone. Worth the effort as you can see the amount of dirt that come out of the valve. Inside there is a very small hole so you can imagine how block it was.
