    Re: My Key broke.

I only have 1 key. Which was supplied with my Grande when i bought it.

If i buy the key blank from ebay, get it cut to my existing key...

Then i would only need another transponder is that right?

Does anyone know how much it costs if i bring the cut key to Toyota for them to program/purchase the transponder only?

    Thanks

            Re: My Key broke.

Looks like your keys are similiar to the Mitsbishi ones. I have a 2001 Challenger and I can get coded or uncoded keys. My ideal sitiuation is I have an uncoded key screwed up underneath the vehicle so that can only unlock the doors and a coded key is hidden inside the vehicle. So only takes a phone call and a phillips screwdriver to get me/ wife back on the road if keys are lost/ damaged whilst out.

How is this flip out key going after 6 months of usage?

                Re: My Key broke.

still absolutely faultless. I do find that I fidget with it, springing out the key & popping it back in whilst I'm walking round the shops etc which I thought could stuff it up more quickly but the spring mechanism still works fine & I love that you don't have that long key poking a hole in your pocket. Re: My Key broke.

After about a year I changes from the flip=out key back to the Toyo original.

Nothing ever went wrong, but I was just worried that one day it would leave me stranded.

My other car has a flip-out key and it is of much better quality (feels much more robust).

                      Re: My Key broke.

has anyone ever replaced the battery in their key?... one of my keys seems to be going flat.. it takes 20 press's on unlock to actually do anything for the first time.. and from then on its ok (for a short while..)

                        Re: My Key broke.

Sounds like the battery to me,just take out the screww on the back (make sure you have the proper size srewdriver otherwise you,ll flog out the phillips head) then prise open the case gently. I think theres another screw inside can,t remember and just replace with the same type of battery. And you,ll be a happy camper.......

Story from inside cover of todays West Australian:

Lady bought Toyota 3 years ago for $14,000. She recently lost her car keys so contacted her dealer and asked for replacement keys.

Rep told her replacement remote keys would cost $309.90 each. Oh well, she thought, a little steep but reasonable.

The the rep tells her it will cost an additional $1202.20 to change the car's computer settings, plus $106.90 for a new ignition barrel, plus $363 for labour!

All $2319.29 or 17% of the original purchase price of the car.

                            Re: My Key broke.

Yesterday I priced a new remote key in Geelong $371, as my third hand Prado only came with one remote. Have got two spares cut, both on remote, $36 each for blank, $10 to cut and then $27.50 at Toyota to code so that the chip is active. Perhaps I should have got the remote key as well because if I loose this one I'm looking at $500 plus for new computer etc. Next time I buy a car it's going to be a question and help me decide yes or no to that car.

Whilst i was there a guy said don't worry, BMW remote keys cost as far as he knew about $3000 each!

The battery in the key of my 2004 TD is a CR1616. Its a 3 volt coin battery.
