Most people leave their spare keys in the kitchen drawer and thats where they stay for years after the car has gone.
I managed to get for a simple phone call to the original owner, both the valet key and the other remote key plus a box load of spare parts and accessories that they didn't want to give to the dealer and get nothing in return. My boss at work bought a hail damaged Mercedes and did the same to get the spare key, saving him heaps.
You've got nothing to lose by trying.

tried that , he rekons he gave all the keys to the dealer. and dealer only had 1, i however bargained a key in there coz i know how much bludy pain these things are ! not jusst with toyotas with any car with a chip in it. i dont understand why people are holding onto keys, what do they plan to do with them in a few years?

        Re: New/replacement keys

Firstly, a disclaimer... my Brother is now in the business of cutting and programming keys for Prado's and similar vehicles with engine immobolisers and remote door locks.

Just this past weekend we tested the procedure on my Prado (2008 D4D GXL), and whilst the programming took us a couple of attempts to get it right, I now have another spare key, fully programmed and functional.

This option is considerably cheaper than having the key replaced by Toyota. If you are interested, PM me and I will be happy to pass on my brother's details. I'm sure he'll do a better deal for PP members.

        All the best,
        LFaR.

            changing battery

Is there much in changing the battery on an original key? Or does it need to be replaced?

I tried the after market original style keys off ebay. Went through 3 of them before trying the flip button ones like in this link.
I ordered 2 so I didn't have to wait for a replacement when the first one broke....2 years later I still have the spare sitting in the kitchen cupboard just in case. I highly recommend them. They are neat and very functional.

                      • HI,
I bought the flip key and i threw it away.......
to place the transponder you have to open it but puting it
back together and getting the flip mechanism to work..a nightmare...
i finally put it together and started the car which was fine...then turned the
car off but the key will not come out....as you know with toyota you push the key to remove it....
with the flip because it square it will not push in far enough....so i dismantled the the and then i was able to remove it.
and when i threw it with my anger a lso threw away the transponder.....i know pretty stupid.....buy the normal
                        toyota shape key....

                        Nick....

                          • Hi,
After loosing my keys somewhere around Ayres Rock, I finally, thanks to other Pradopoint members, purchased a replacement through glwdave off gumtree. Initially had a few problems, but Dave was extremely helpful and it all sorted now and fully functional. I can recommend this process as it is a lot cheaper than what I was quoted from Toyota. So thanks Guys !!

                            • Hi,

After searching for a month or so and getting a Toyota quote for $500 ea key, I emailed Dave from a gumtree search. I didn't have a remote key for my 2004 GXL, but after a few queries, Dave took a best guess and sent 2 keys my way. The keys arrived, but unfortunately no response so i was a bit disheartened, but a quick email to Dave and 2 newer freq keys were in the mail (toyota changed the freq somewhere in 2004). I received them 2 days later and the keys worked straight away.

Dave sends clear instructions on programming the remote, then the transponder (both done by u @ 0 extra cost) and the final step once coded is to get the keys cut. This cost my wife $15 total in Moorabbin at a locksmith on Chesterville Rd. They even cut a tester (metal) key which will be great for the beach for free.

Finally, I sent back the 1st batch of (uncut, unprogrammed) keys and can't thank Dave enough for his help & patience. Can't recommend them enough and if you're just after a second remote key, the whole frequency thing will be straightforward.

Now everytime I walk up to the car, I get excited... (i need a life)

                              Thanks Dave

                              Cheers

                              Paul

                              • Hi,

I realise this thread hasn't seen any action for 8 months, but I wanted to add some information that may be of interest.

I have a 2004 Prado GXL that I bought from my brother nearly 18 months ago, and which he bought brand new. In the 9 years of the car's life, two key cases have broken - one of the factory keys, and one aftermarket key (which completely snapped apart last week when I went to start the car).

Over the last week, I've had two key cases delivered from two different sellers on that popular online auction site. Having now had a good look at the design of these plastic key cases, I think there's a lot to be desired in terms of how robust they are. Here are some photos showing what I mean...

1). This is the factory key that broke after about, ummm, 5 - 7 years of use...

And this is the other half of the key case showing how the metal key blade is moulded into the plastic housing...

I've highlighted the plastic ribs because this seems to be the design feature that is different between the various key cases on the market.

2). This is the $10 aftermarket key that snapped last week...

This key cost my brother about $10 when he bought it about 3 years ago. You can see that the plastic ribs and blade housing are similar to the factory key shown above.

Just for interest, this is what the metal key blade looks like when it's broken away from the plastic housing. There's not a lot of metal being gripped by the moulded plastic...

3). This is a $5 key case I bought from that online auction site, and received this week. It has the Toyota logo similar to the factory key, but the design of the plastic housing is different, and there seems to be less plastic "gripping" the metal key blade...

4). This is another $5 key case I received from a different seller this week. This one has no ribs under the blade holding section, but the holding section is the full width of the case...

If you had to make a prediction, which one of the four plastic cases above do you think would last the longest?

Has anybody discovered a key case that they think is REALLY robust??

And finally, just by the by, I ended up moulding the separated metal key blade, from the broken key, into a resin and hardener mould...

I figured that key would still be useful if I was somewhere where I didn't want the remote keys to get wet, but still wanted to lock/unlock the car.

                                cheers,
                                Al.
