Valve Clearance

Just had a 80000 service on my 2008 turbo diesel
The report says checked and inspected valve clearance found No2 and No4 to be incorrect .
Is this unusual for 80000 klms ? What causes this to be out of spec and what effect will it have on the performance ?

Hi.
i can only speak for the older 1kz diesels, and it common for a couple of the clearances to be out. They have a small gap range that they must be within ( ie 0.20mm-0.30mm) and the gaps are adjusted by using different thickness shims. Usually adjusted i think from memory about every 50000. or something like that.

Performance wise they are usually out by a small amount and should not effect performance. however if not checked at all for say 200000kms then the amount out of range could cause the engine performance loss or noisy tapetts.

I have had 4 lots of toyota diesels, all valve clearances adjusted at service intervals, and there was always 1 or two out of range. so its quite normal.

At least they checked them , because i have heard they often dont bother as it is generally felt they seldom need adjusting which i know from my experience is incorrect.
