Re: Brown Davis Bash Plate BULK ORDER For SA

Rob, you do NOT need bashplates for the Border Track. Anyone who caves in a bash plate/guard on sand is just using too much speed.

Sorry Andrew but if I get a set of guards then I would go steel over aluminium. I'm looking at a few serious trips over the next two to three years that will need some real protection and aluminimum will not offer it. If you are caught up on the gaurds the I can see aluminium bending like a card, even if it is 3mm.

      Hi Nick,
For some reason, I thought the BD bashplates were alloy. Will check out steel prices tomorrow.
Seeing the powdercoaters tomorrow about my airconditioning panels, so will get an indication on pricing for zinc plating, then powdercoating over that.

Brown Davis underbody protection is actually made of 3mm aluminised steel. No I don't work for BD however they look after my Prado and I am a satisfied customer. The bash plates are very well made and tough as. You need to be aware that the plate needs to be removed to change the oil however mine has a hole cut into it and a cover plate bolted on with countersunk bolts. Works well.

The older BD guards required the entire plate to be removed. The newer ones (I think for at least the last twelve months from discussions) have had an access panel that you remove similar to what you have described).

              PMs on pricing sent.
AMTS, I agree with Schaffer, I would only want a steel plate, I understand its going to cost more to manufacture and coat, but want ultimate protection. Look forward to seeing indicative costs

Re: Brown Davis Bash Plate BULK ORDER For SA

Had a crawl under the car and looking at pics of BD's bashplate and re-reading Schaffer's post on the 3 different BD guards, it is now becoming obvious to me that my version of the bashplate (if I was to go and make one) is to cover all the way back to the transmission. This requires 2 BD bashplates to achieve this.

So would people prefer to have a plate to cover the sump only or extended to cover the transmission? From speaking to a local fabricator, a full length guard that covers the transmission could be made for about the same price as just the BD sump guard

Here is the 3D model so far. Nothing has been accurately drawn as yet. ops:
It covers the sump and transmission.

Re: Brown Davis Bash Plate BULK ORDER For SA

I am not in a hurry but note the following.
                  1. My brother in law cannot beat the BD direct price.
                  2. I prefer the steel over aluminium. If I am going to improve the underbody protection I want to do it once and be sure of the product.
So my preference is the current Brown Davis 2 piece set up.
As I said I am not in a hurry, but don't want to be holding off forever. I know I don't/won't need these plates at Bendleby in June, BUT, safe is better than sorry and my lift is sagged due to the many mods I have made since getting the lift done originally so I feel the risk of "bad luck" is a little higher than normal.

                    Rev B - 2 plate design

                    Advantages:
                    - Easier to get to grease nipples by just removing the rear plate
                    - Can replace 1 out of 2 should 1 plate get seriously damaged (thanks Matt)

Definitely 2 plates due to the weight comPonent, and the ability to drop the plates much easier than if it were just one.

Weight wise, 10kg for the rear, 15kg for the front - according to CAD for steel.

Here are the sheet layouts to see how many I can fit on one sheet

                            Very impressive.

Can I check what you plan to make them from and looking at the pictures suggests they will have a cap for the diff hole? Is that right?

I think it might be for a sump plug hole to change oils.

Re: Brown Davis Bash Plate BULK ORDER For SA

300 grade steel is what I can get my hands on locally out at Bluescope or Onesteel. I'm enquiring for alloy steel but I think that is going to drive the price up real high. I enquired about aluminised steel and the response I get was "Do you mean zincalume?" One mob said that it is a coating of aluminium to better aid in rust prevention. Here is a definition from wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminized_steel
I'm thinking that normal steel, zinc coated and then powder coated would offer pretty good protection.

The big hole is for access to the sump plug (as Matt mentioned).
Will look at what can be done for access to the front diff as well because if the front diff was covered ... well let's just say that I'm not too keen on manhandling 15kg of steel while under the car.
