  • Re: Spare tyre carrier spacer.

    Hi amts
I had some laser cutting done by J.H. Williams at Church Place in Pt. Adelaide.
The cut edge left by the laser is very square, but a light file soon took of the sharp corner.
They may have a minimum job charge.
The name of the guy I dealt with is Mr. Mark Hoepner ph.844710044 Email [email protected]
Laser cutting capacity :20mm in mild steel
    :16mm in Stainless Steel
    :8mm in Aluminium
    Good luck Andrew
    Cheers Troy

Laser 3D got back with a price of $330 for 8pcs.

Thanks foxclan, I've tried JH Williams and they asked me to try Computer Cut.
Computer Cut will do it for $20+GST ea. for the 8 pcs, or $13+GST ea. for 20pcs and over. This is with waterjet cutting.

The machinist that our company normally uses is still slightly cheaper. So it's time to drum up more interest. The cost will be a maximum of $62 and it can only go down from there.

Im still keen, they will be higher quality than the TJM im sure, even at a slightly reduced price (thats if you still want to proceed with it)
We have used computer cut before through work and found them to be quite good.

Far out  I'm in the wrong business. I've used these guys before and their price has been good in the past.

If they were only 10mm think I'd cut them with my plasma cutter. 12mm is a little too thick.

When I spoke to Adelaide Profile Services, they mentioned that laser cutting would definitely be cheaper. Not sure why Laser 3D came back so high.

There is also Laser Works in Plympton. Give them a go. Only thing is I'm not sure how thick they can cut.

Update: Still waiting on a quote from Laser Works.

Anyone else still interested in these?

                    Hi Andrew,

I also would be interested in a set of the spacers. I just had BFG's 275/65/17 All terrains fitted today and cannot bolt up the spare as it touches the rear door panel and wiper arm. I will need to check that a 12 mm spacer will provide enough clearance. I will take a few measurements and come back to you.
                    Sounds good.
                    Chris.

                      Hi Chris,
                      OK no problems.
I know that tyre widths vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but theoretically, going from 265 to 275 in the same profile would be 5mm wider at each side plus a 'little bit'. Hopefully that little bit isn't more then 7mm

Laser Works got back to say that they can't cut 12mm, only up to 10mm. Could have told me that over the phone when I rang in the 1st place.

I'll be going with my machinist as he is a known quantity to me and is also a few bucks cheaper.
I have made the shape of the spacer to a simpler shape such that the sides are parallel. i.e. unlike the dog bone spacers which curves inwards in the middle. Everything else is the same.

Have you looked into a price of just a rectangular piece of steel (not dog bone shape) cut on a power hacksaw or similar and then two holes strategically drilled through the appropriate locations. Would want to run a file around the egdges to remove burrs but I would think this is a LOT cheaper than laser/water cutting.

A rectangular piece would have 2 of its corners 'exposed' (or hanging mid-air) when mounted onto the door. The purpose of the rounded ends is to match the rounded corner profile of the raised section of the door.

True but you could easily remove the corners without the expense of Laser cutting.

I mentioned a Power Hacksaw earlier. I was thinking you could get something made at a steel supplier that will cut 12mm stainless with a power hacksaw. I'm assuming you could get that done. For the corners you coulc have this cut on a 45d egree angle to provide clearance. I havn't donw that before but I've steel cut up and they typically charge $1-2 per cut depening upon what and how you have something cut.

Possibly speak to some of the steel suppliers about the possibility of doing this. I've used Brighton Steel Supplies a few times and they have plenty of gear for cutting.
