  • Re: Spare tyre carrier spacer.

The power hacksaw (if I think it is what you think it is ) won't be able to cut a round corner due to the width of the blade. 45deg cut yes but won't look as good as rounded corners.

I rang Brighton Steel and to supply enough mild steel to do the 5 sets costs $48.37 (this is for 3m length - getting extra just in case of stuff ups). Then add $2.20/cut and brings the total to $60. Brighton steel won't/can't do the 45deg cuts in the corners. So far, that's $12 a set for rectangular shaped spacers.

Then I either have to do it myself (which means buying the power hacksaw) or get someone to do it. I don't have time on my hands and the minimum charge for someone to cut the corners off is probably around $50-$100. So it'll end up being around $20-$25 a set before powdercoating and fasteners.

As for stainless, Brighton have 40x10 but 40x12 is a bit harder to find. It's also harder to drill holes, etc.

If there were 10 people interested, then I would go with Computer Cut who will do it for $26+GST/set using my supplied 6061 plate.

We are thinking the same thing here. No way it cut cut round but then it is something quite well hidden so if it looks neat but not ultra sexy then it dosn't matter.

Well, to the 5 who are interested... switched, IRON-PAWW, FC_Holden, MattyV and Toyotaman (unconfirmed)

what do you reckon? Since these are going on your car and not mine, you can vote on it.
        - Ally with machined rounded edges
        - Steel with 45deg corners

An additional thought... if we went with aluminium and as it doesn't rust like steel and is hidden behind the tyre, the cost per set could be cut down to low to mid $40'ish if we forgo anodizing.

Better get these moving as I see that switched is getting some 70series fitted early Jan. and Toyotaman is driving around without a spare

          Hey Andrew,

1 vote for the machined rounded edges and either a black anodised or powdercoated finish. I don't mind paying for quality work with a quality finish. My only problem is i dummied up my spare on the carrier today with some washers and found that i needed min 15mm + of spacer for the 275/65/17 BFG's to clear the wiper arm. This may be important information for anyone else considering fitting 275's. Can your machinist cut 15mm + in alloy. Really i think a 20mm spacer would be ideal in my application.
          Chris aka Toyotaman.

          P.S. Also i do i get a prado.point sticker.

            Hi Chris,
I'll see if I can scrounge up some 16mm or 20mm material. Failing that, I'll source some 1.5" OD SS mudguard washers to pack the carrier away from the spacer. That, I think, would be the cheapest way to go if I can't get free material.

If we are going retangular steel then can do that in the shed and file the corners round, so looks like I'm out. Thanks for all the time spent chasing this up

                Hi Andrew
                I am still keen.
My vote is for the rounded corners option and a finish in black of some sort that will last the miles. As Chris (Toyotaman) said, a few extra dollars is worth it for a good result.
Thanks for all your efforts on looking into getting these made. Just let us know how we get the $$ to you (including the postage to Melbourne for me).
                Cheers

I'm happy to spend a few extra $$. I would go for aluminum as well, preferably coated as it can corrode. Is that still an option now?

Anodized aluminium spacers with rounded ends is still on. I just thought I'd throw in a non-anodised option as aluminium develops an oxide layer which protects it from further oxidation.

I can't find any 16 or 20mm ally plate. The closest is 16mm nylon but I'm not sure exactly what plastic it is. I just assumed it is nylon. It is very pale yellow in colour.

I measured the 12mm ally plate that I have and it is actually 12.7mm. Taking out the calipers and it is a bee's whisker shy of 13mm. Another 2 washers would take it out to the 15mm min clearance you need.

                        Hi Andrew,

With the 15mm spacer there is 2mm of clearance between the wiper arm and my spare BFG. I will need a 20mm spacer or i will have to buy one of the Kaymar spare wheel carrier spacer which are 40mm. Thank you for all your efforts. Please message me if you do come across any 20mm ally plate that you can have cut as i would rather this 20mm spacer than the 40mm from Kaymar.
                        Chris.

Just confirming these are still progressing? I will be in need of a spacer in about 3 weeks (upgrading to 70series tyres) and don't want to be stuck driving without a spare.

                            Hi Jase,

IRON-PAWW did not respond to this thread and Toyotaman has not responded to my PM. I have PM'ed noddy7 about this thread as well but no response yet. I believe he is getting the same 275/65R17 BFG's as Toyotaman. If so and noddy7 is interested, then both of them can share the cost of the 20mm flat bar I am buying from Capral.

As for postage for interstate members, it will be a 3kg satchel from Aus Post which costs $9.90. The 12.7mm spacers would weigh just over 500g which is the next satchel size down. So I can't use that satchel. Otherwise the 500g satchel is about $6.

I would prefer to get 5 members on board with this to get the anodising costs for each set down.

So does this mean unless another 4 parties come forward you will pull the plug? I do understand from a cost perspective if thats the case, i will just source my spacer from TJM with no worries 8)
