Who has boosted up there 1KZ 120 or 90 series prado?..

  • Who has boosted up there 1KZ 120 or 90 series prado?..

    Wondering who's done it? Thinking about doing it , about another 4psi ..... I know they have boost cut so need to stay away from that point
    What gains or losses have you had?

    I ran it up to 14.5psi and cracked the head immediately (and I mean within 60secs). I am not a great believer in coincidences, so I now sit on 10.5psi max. YMMV, and others will say they run a squillion psi without problem. If you wish you can roll the dice and see for yourself.

      Yeah na I know what the std toyota heads are like however I can put a new head on for 1k
      10.5 sounds sensible , was it much power increase?

        Not a lot, but with the boost controller it comes on sooner. I can't use all the power I have at the moment because I hit my 720C EGT limit first. Looking at removing the muffler and going straight through to try and lower EGTs

          I'm running a Turbotech manual controller set to 14psi max. I've done a few thousand km like that, with a camper in tow for a lot of it. It definitely has more midrange and it feels like it picks up quicker from standstill, but up big hills you have to keep an eye on the EGT gauge as it does get hot (especially in hot weather). Mine has a Tunit chip that hasn't been remapped for it though, and I don't have an intercooler fitted. This month, possibly next, I'll fit the intercooler and scoop, and then take it to have it remapped. Until I crack the head, I won't take it off.

            You don't have a factory intercooler ???
            As far as I know my head is original at 247k now
            Previous life the engine was in a mine site car in karratha so it's seen plenty of hot hot weather so maybe it won't crack �� wishfull thinking probly

              MUMSRIG was running 15psi. The chipit chip required more boost as it was sooting up the rear bar, there was plenty of fuel that needed compressing

              Running stock boost at the moment with a new AMC billet head and high flow AXT Turbo. Can't wait to boost and chip it again!

                      Hey t303 how come you that high with the egts?? I'm running 13psi with a dp chip and a 2 3/4 exhaust and I have never had that higher temps even when she's working her guts out in very soft sand or thick black soil mud. Something does not sound right there. The highest mines ever got is bout 680-700

                        but i agree with your statement, in fact i dont think i have had them over 600. I have Steinbauer, snorkel, 3" exhaust and am running about 12.5 PSI boost, i have the hilux bonnet scoop on too which seemed to help with temps

                          Maybe, but I live in Central Queensland and I spend a bit time out west even further and it still don't run that high and I am convinced that my gauges are spot on cause they are good quality ones auto meter. Still something don't seen right

                            Had mine set at 14+ psi for 60K km and now at 18psi for the last 10k+ km. Got a few other mods too mind you.
                            Max EGT when stock standard was 650 degrees pre turbo. Now lucky to see over 500 degrees so still have potential to turn up the wick a little more.
                            It's not hard to build a rock solid 1KZ and get more power out of it.
                            I'd like to go a mechanical pump but not sure I have the enthusiasm to see it through.

                              Lots of guys in NZ have converted to mech pump on the 1kz surfs.... Big boost and they get big power
                              It's easy if you have a manual car... In fact any mechanical injector pump will work on them and run but under fuelling would be an issue...
