    Re: D.I.Y camp/rear door table

    Hi guys,

Well I decided to have a go at one of these great tables so we have something to make lunch on at tomorrows 4wd course. After looking at all the awesome ones so far we decided to go with 12mm Ply as it was lighter than the 16. I don't intend having my kids sit on it . I had a quick PM to Joey to check out some details, Thanks Joey I owe you a beer.

Finally my wife and I decided to leave ours uncovered by carpet so it will be easy to wipe up. At this stage it has two coats of stain but I will be applying several coats of varnish as well.

    Cheers Neil

Picked it up as a boxed kit (Net and 4 anchor points) at BCF for around $12. Had to knot the net in the middle to make it a bit tighter but the middle top loop we made can go over the centre rear set head rest holder as an extra restraint point. We mainly use it when shopping to stop stuff falling out the back door when we open it.

                  Re: D.I.Y camp/rear door table

I too would be interested in how this was done so neat, I decided to pull my finger out on the weekend and go to get the required parts to build my table. went to bunnings and they didn't have the shocks cord posts or the bungy loops. So I ventured into spotlight ops: and low and behold the girls there didn't have a clue even when I showed them the pictures  . So I looked around for 1/2 or so and decided it was a waste of time and went home to drown my sorrows due to my failure to get the required parts (Bundy's all round any excuse will do) . Looks like i'll have to take the 20 minute drive to the nearest BCF to get all the gear .

I had to have a chuckle at that story - I hate it when you get all keen, go to the shop to get all the bits n pieces, and end up leaving empty handed and deflated after not being able to get the parts.

Chin up matey - best idea is to ring around first, but make sure you speak to someone decent so you don't waste your time going to the shop after saying they have the bits you are after, then realise when you get there the person you spoke to was a knob who didn't know what you wanted.

2003GXL Greg, Try Clark Rubber if you have one nearby. Thats where I got them. I used them to secure plastic drawers in the Jayco. That way I could stack them & slide the drawers out instead of forever shuffling boxes to open the top lid. The bungy clips hold it all in place when traveling.

Yes it was a little dissapointing but the bundies fixed that.

I didn't think of clark rubber they are even closer I will have a look there and see how it goes. The piece of board, hinges and carpet are getting lonely sitting there waiting for the other items to finish the job off.

Thanks for all your advise. Hopefully I will give it a go on the weekend, Just have check the fridge 1st to ensure I have plenty of fluids to rehydrate ( Bundies)

                          Re: D.I.Y camp/rear door table

I recently built my own table - based on the info in this thread. Anyway its fantastic of course and one of the best things you can do if you go camping heaps. Anyway, was having issues with light. There just wasn't enough when working on the table at night. Most of the time we end up having to cook dinner after dark, mostly due to staying out on the 4wd tracks too late

Anyway I have installed a cheap but effective light. The light is hooked up to the main rear light and is wired in with one wire each side of the standard interior light. This way, the switch will control the light bar in the same way the rear interior light works. Its an easy mod to do and if you have a table... you really should think about something like this as its stupidly handy to have.

                          LED Bar - Jaycar = $30 approx
Sticky Sided Velcro - Spotlight -- no idea on price as I had it from way back as leftovers from another project.

Anyway the main thing is to power feed the wire into the little rubber loom that goes between the door and Prado body. This way its all water tight and out of sight. Put a small pin hole in the rubber tube on the "inside" section where it pops out inside the body cavity. I used electrical tape over the wire, after everything was in place just to make sure the wire was not going to move and also ensure that no dust / water could get in... even though the whole thing is inside the body cavity at this stage (Just being thorough)

If you want to get the wire though without taking all the plastics off then tape it to a length of coat hanger wire or similar so you can push it through inside the cavity etc. Keep in mind that behind the door plastics you have a clear "dust" plastic that you will need to carefully puncture to get the wire inside the door cavity. I went in at the edge so as not to make a hole in it. Also, at the edge you can carefully lift up the plastic where it is stuck down, push the wire through and then stick it back down.

Anyway - the pic will tell the rest. Works well and no more head torch for cooking meals
Oh - and the length of wire that comes with the Jaycar LED light bar is long enough to do the job so you don't need to lengthen it.

Think I had better see my cabinet maker mate.

He should have a laminated board around his workshop that would be just right for the job.

                              Anyone used laminate?
