  • 120 small body lift for $5-$10

whilst changing my spring on monday arvo, i thought
i'd give the body a small lift.
i had some nylon, similar to your copping board, so decided to cut some spacers.
had a look and how much extra length i had on the body bolts.
16mm at the front going down to 10mm and the rear,
so i had a rough idea what would fit.
out came my drill and holesaws.
cut 8 (76mm) and drilled a 13mm centre hole for body bolt.
i put 12mm packers in the front ranging down to 6mm in the rear.
took me 30 mins the make and clean up the 6 spacers.
about 45 to an hour to undo and remove and body bolts.
out with a trolley jack and big block of oregan, lifted the body and slid
the packers in above the body rubber, sitting the body bolts in to align the spacers.
**becareful not to over lift body as you could damage/stretch something**
refitted and body bolt washers and nuts - they only just start.
tighten them all up, and job done.
it took about 2 hours to complete.

Been there done that, there goes your insurance. Oh and they will crush without a steel centre tube.

i have retained the original mount and centre tube,
so if you have read it, i state the packer sits on top of body mount.

i used industrial nylon, not a chopping board, and this stuff can
            withstand large weights and impacts.
we use it at work in/on manufacturing machinery.

maybe others need to get off the computer and show their mods.
anyone can sit back and talk trash.
            others have a go

Lets please all remember the forum rules about flaming other members guys.

The fact here is someone has had a go at something unusual and well done to them. They have not stated they have used a chopping block, more Nylon "like" a chopping block.

From my memory the original body mounts are actually rubber?? Meaning it probably isnt as hard as Nylon in reality, and Nylon comes in many different tensile strengths..

Yes it "may" void his insurance, but then again maybe it wont. If painted black I would suspect any inspector would look straight over them

And I still want to see pichers... Did it make much difference to the overall look of the vehicle?

Did I forget to mention the creaks that will develop as the body moves and after a while the body mounts push through the floor pan and it may have changed the brake bias, speaking from experience

Body lifts are the first thing insurance assessors look for on 4wds, speaking from experience

Re: 120 small body lift for $5-$10

Well done for having a go at something, I haven't got the nerve for something like that :|

However, before I knew what I do now...I blew about $5000 due to a body lift (2") on my old 'cruiser.

Someone had done a homemade job which took the radiator up with body and engine stayed on chassis causing cooling problems. It would overheat on any day over 23 degrees which in turn slowly killed the glowplugs. All this overheating of course also killed the 2B engine. Trying to start all the time with dud plugs in turn killed the starter motor. And around we went time and time again. I was replacing glow plugs every 2 months  can't believe I let it go so long now.

Anyway, moral of story: do I really need the lift?

Wife often states "We've never had any problems with our Toyotas..." Until I remind her of the lemon. :?

There are 10 body mounts :!: I'd say you missed the 2 small ones located near the rear springs. They are quite small when compared to the other eight.

I think the point of the post is to show a DIY mod that can be achieved on a budget, not to justify the pros or cons of a body lift (thats been covered before in other posts).

It's always good to see a bit of built not bought going on. Good effort Damo

Sorry, not trying to suggest this was stupid or anything...love to see people doing this sort of thing.

Keep it up, Pradopoint wouldn't be what it is without people trying/doing this stuff.

Re: 120 small body lift for $5-$10

I think this is a great example of someone having a go when there isn't a product available for a reasonable $. As an engineering material nylon has a lot going for it and I cannot see any problems with this application. I think there would be plenty of people surprised where plastics are used in heavy industry. And in some applications it works 100x better than some of the fancy or exotic metals such as piping nasty chemicals or abrasive materials. As for insurance is a private matter between the parties. My only query is why only 6mm lift at the rear? Seems like you had enough thread on the bolts to do a level lift front to back or am I missing something? Oh and Damo any chance of some pictures? Even as installed would be handy.

                          thanks

You are correct... off the shelf body lift kits are often made from impact resistant nylon. Brands such as Marks Adaptors spring to mind.

Correct and to be engineered they need a steel crush tube insert
