  • Roof top water storage

Thought this might interest a few members , purchased a tracklander roofrack and it came with a homemade water storage container. Then got to thinking about keeping the Misses happy while camping ie Showers ( She is ok with the shovel toilet!!!) So the water container is just made out of PVC pipe and joiners and a tap on the end, all avail from Bunnings . So what I came up with was on the 2 Fill ports I placed a tubeless tyre value in each and with my compressor attached to one, pressurised the unit and attached a hose to the tap with a shower head. So presto a pressurised shower and painting the unit it heats up under the Sun . On the other tyre valve placed a Straun Tyre deflator on as a pressure relief valve . But have found that this is not needed , was just used during testing. Found this a very cheap way of carring water out of the way and "mains pressure " shower in one.
Have always seen other peoples projects on this site and thought its always nice to share ideas.

Nice idea. Especially with the solar heating effect.
    How many litres capacity ?
given that 1 litre water = 1kg I'm always hesitant too put too much weight on the roof.

Have not worked it out ,will fill it up and update, yes as for how much goes on top but feel that the way it wraps around the rack it gives a more even weight , so keep most things of the top , but do put the fishing rods up on top , had to many snap in too !!!!

I did the same on my rack a couple of months ago. Very similar to yours except mine is a continous square and painted it white (pipe was a yellow colour) as i needed it for potable water (didn't want it to hot can get warm where I go fishing and camping) and also for a shower for those long fishing trips.
Also just bought a cheep compressor and ran it from the back with a switch. To hard to keep running the air line from the comp under the bonnet.
Carries about 40lt. Usally about 35lt you can use if you park on a bit of a slope!
System works a treat for the cost of it!

Just an update on the capacity takes just under 50 litres , have a portable compressor with a power outlet in the back so can run it from the back without having to connect to the battery direct.

            Hey Digger
Thats a good quantity of water.Did you use 100mm (mine was 90mm left overs from around)?
Dont know if you use the inspection hatches to fill up? I find it easier (or lazier ) to attach the hose to the tap and remove the valve and wait for the squirt of water out of the valve!I carry a few different attachments on board, this is good when you pull up to servo's or caravan parks.

Hi yes normally fill up by unscrewing the valve covers but your method seems the go , did found one small hicup have mounted it flush against the sides of the rack and found it difficult to tie things down on the rack, not been able to get rope between rack and water stowage . Mod in progress to give a 1cm gap to make room to tie stuff on top, 30 sec tent to long to go inside.Tried it out on the weekend up Sandy Cape got up to 40 Deg outside temp so heated up very nice and maybe a bit hot shower so just waited until it cooled down abit . Have to say a success and Misses very happy  Cheers Digger

Cool got to keep the missus a happy camper! (makes your job being a hubby easier!). Can you thread webbing between the pipe and rack and use that as anchor points? Might need to butter the missus up if you want to sew some custom ones up!
