 Actually, the way some people tailgate, I'd love to hook up the reverse lights to switch on...... either that or one of those flashing signs that say "Hey Stupid, Back Off, I'm not that kind of Guy

You need to put a diode in the line from the reverse light to the camera. This will allow current to flow to the camera when the reverse light comes on but will block the current flow back to the reverse lights when you turn the switch on. Get a diode which has current rating greater than the maximum current that is drawn by your reversing camera.

Make sure you put the diode in the right way around. There is usually a band around one end and you connect that end to the camera.

This is what wannawodka wrote in an email to me when i pm him about reverse camera, might be an idea to talk to him about it he is very helpful.

        Hi Adam

I have no problems with the over-ride at all. All I've done is fit a two position (both active) switch (Narva brand) so I can toggle between a normal reverse signal current (green wire in behind the dash) and a live accessory wire.

When in the position which completes the normal reverse wire signal the camera works normally - image on the sat nav changes when you put into reverse. When the switch is in the other position and draws current from a live accessory it acts the same as the reverse circuit but in completely independant of any reverse signal, so on all the time when the ignition is on.

I don't prescribe to the advice you've received - as far as I know the unit will switch 'alt monitor mode' if it receives a live current and has nothing to do with the GPS function.

A diode in line fixes the problem, thats how mine is done.

nice one, i was toying with the idea of not wiring it to the reverse power and just using a switch to turn it on when i needed it... but would probably find that i don't use it that much in that case!

Thanks Firey. I should have posted this question six months ago. Now I know what to do the job will be straightforward as opposed to me trying different options, none of which would have probably worked and would have had me totally p#ssed off at the end of the day.

Simple advice like this is what makes this site worthwhile.

Just got my eclipse today about time too, but got a good deal here in australia for $245 including adapter they said i needed it. Thing is there is no green reverse wire with it as alot of you guys seem to have hope i don't need this before i start pulling the car to bits.

You shouldn't need the green wire in the later model. As far as I understand anyway. There's nothing hard about the install, just a little time consuming removing all the panels..! Good luck with it. 8)

                      Reverse Camera

Hi all. I am only new to the site and are quite impressed by the content.
I am wanting to do a few mods to my prado (Grande) and was wondering if any of you could provide me with contact regarding the purchase of the camera and possibly reverse power loom. mine is an 04 model with #18002 on the face plate. It doesnt have an DISC-AUX swith also (mine only has DISk switch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I know this issue has been talked about a lot. But I still havent been able to find any info or pics of the pre-wired reverse camera setup for the new 07/08 model prados.

As of Sept 07 all Prados come pre wired for a reverse camera. Before I pull the dashboard and tail gate apart I am hoping someone on Pradopoint has attempted a successful camera install using the existing wiring who can give me a few pointers and hopefully pictures!

                        Thanks

I finally got around to pulling the rear door trim off my 07 VX Prado. Ive attached pics to show what I found and assume the unused while plug is for the reverse camera. It was the only wiring not attached to anything.

Now I just need to work out how to attach a camera to it. Does anyone know if the other end of the plug is available from a electronics store etc, so I can wire up a camera?. I have not purchased a camera yet.[img]

If you can get hold of a wiring diagram you should be able to work out if its for the camera or not. They stick lots of unused plugs all over the car for various bits and pieces. :?

What colours are the wires going into the plug??

I didnt/couldnt see the colouring on the wires due to all the black plastic and tape. But, I have a feeling it is the right one as there were no other plugs or spare wires to be seen. All new Prados (sept07 onwards) are suppose to be prewired for a reverse camera.
