  • Accessory Socket Ideas

Hi everyone, I found I had a shortage of accessory sockets, so I sorted it and now have plenty of low power sockets. Yet to come is a higher capacity socket in the rear, but as I don't have a fridge in the Prado there is no rush. So here are the photo's, complete with beach sand. It's pretty self explanatory. Power is via a fused 50 amp wire to a relay under the console, tripped by the accessory plug wire. Any questions or suggestions feel free to weigh in. Over the next month or so I'm fitting the charging system for the camper and electric brakes, I may add to this post later.

The rear hella socket, tapped into existing socket wiring just to give a choice. Not for heavy use.

The rear socket is good for 120 watts (or 10 amps) same as front. I think they are individually fused too.

      nicely done!

i've been keen to do something to get more power in the front... with the GPS, phone and UHF i've already need a double adapter!!

was going to hard wire the UHF but would still be handy to have a few extras for ipod etc..

I used the Sutar ordinary 12v sockets just for the convenience of being able to plug anything in, but the Hella type socket is much better quality and won't wiggle loose, if I do any more I'll be using those, and they would look ok on the centre console as well I think.

I bought them on ebay, just do a quick search. Good luck.

I picked up a couple of Sutar sockets from BCF - one for each side in the back.

I also picked up a three way extension socket from Supercheap - plugged it in at the front, ran the cable under the centre console and attached it to the back of the centre storage console - for the boys to run their toys.

                Cheers

Methinks hardwiring is the way to go for any fixed accessories

I have put four sockets in the very rear corners - 2 each side, 1 off the main battery and 1 off the aux battery. Very handy for the fridge, handheld UHF (that stays plugged into main battery so it's always charged) etc.

Also one in the back of the centre console at the bottom - great for the kids to plug their DVD player or games into.

Again Matthew - your advice is both wise and timely Gee that sounds corny, doesn't it ?

I do prefer the idea of hardwiring the power sockets in - and run them off the second battery - but I couldn't figure how to fit a couple of points into the back of that centre console. The extension unit is a cheap way of keeping the kids quiet while I suss out a better way.

Where did you put the one in the back of the console - and have you got a pic (sorry, I'm a visual sort of guy  ) ??

                    Cheers

Thought I would show a pic of my accessory socket instal. Power runs from auxillary battery and is split via fuse box which is hidden in rear panel. Fuse box puchased from Jaycar.

Looks like the rear sockets has been deleted altogether now, I looked at a GX in the showroom in Mareeba the other day, and surprise, no rear 12v socket. The sales guy did not know either, he had just had a GXL leave the shop recently and did not notice, this seem to worry him too. My new GX should be here late November, update then.

                            Cheers
