  • Lifting a 120

    Hi,
I own a petrol 120 and want to start to use it off road instead of just the missus taking the kids to school in it. Not had permission yet but it’s cheaper than me buying a separate car just for off roadin’ besides it’s such a waste at the old girl (the car that is) has never been in low range !!
So I’m after some advice on how high to lift it so it’s still usable on road but good enough off road. What sort of shockers, ? etc etc.
Also what manufacturer of kits are recommended?
I’m pretty savvy on the off road thing as owned a couple of hybrid Landy defender 90’s in the UK and I’m dying to get back into it. Not sure what Aus has to offer but I bet it’s bl00dy good fun out there.
Also do you guys know of any decent clubs to join close to the Gold Coast who I can join to try out my soon to be modified toy?

    Cheers

    Hi,

I'm using Koni raid's and king springs (raised) with airbags in the rears.

Found to be very good ride both on and off road.

    Cheers

Hey Pommie, plenty of choices, i run ARB basically as i have used it before and like the idea of after sales service right across the country, you also have TJM and as well a lot of guys run Bilstein with various spring combo. Have a good read through the 120 suspension section have a look at some build ups heaps of info already here. As far as lift goes 2 inches(50mm) is about the norm, doesn't stress the CV's and is legal.

I not long ago replaced my standard suspension with iron man shocks and coils all round as like you my misses drives it more than me , i wanted a lift aswell so went for the 50mm raised set and it worked out really good still rides great and looks a lot better as well think i got it for around $1700 off ebay and fitted my self think by memeroy it raised it by about 45mm but i will say over the last 6months the front has dropped a little bit (only have alloy bullbar,no winch) but overall happy with it

Wow $1700 unfitted I payed $1600 for ARB fitted. The sagging only normally comes from poor quality springs.

I paid I think $1050 supply only for a 50mm EFS lift kit. Absolutely no problems with it from me.
As you (original poster) can tell, there is a LOT of info and options out there, so you will need to do a lot of research to find what suits you.

                Hi All
With the suspension lifts that everyone has done, has anyone experienced any problems once the suspension has been upgraded?

TJM good price and good gear, ARB could be sharper I would stay away from pedders. Go to ARB see of they would get closer to the TJM price if not go TJM.

Keep in mind that you dont 'HAVE' to lift it to use it. Sure it makes them better, but they are VERY capable off road just as they are.

As tassie said, a standard Prado is one of the more capable vehicles available straight off the showroom floor. Don't let the lack of a lift kit stop you from enjoying the tracks, it hasn't stopped me!

Joining a club is a top idea, I would highly recommend it. Not only will they show you where to go 4wdriving but in a convoy on a club organised trip, there is always help at hand should you get stuck.

Here is a list of Queensland 4wd clubs:
                        http://www.4wdqld.com.au/club-contacts.html

I did a Google on "4wd clubs gold coast" and found The Gold Coast 4WD Club:

They can fit this for $1560 including a wheel alignment.

Details are in the following web page:

It survived the Cape, so can't be too bad...
