  • Bilstiens with lovells????

    Hi all,

I've been investigating suspension options for my GXL 120 V6 for the past 3 months and it seemed to all boil down to personal choice. So based on general consensus I had opted for Bilies and Lovelles. However upon placing my order it was put to me that the recommendation from my supplier would be NOT to use Lovelles as they are a higher/longer travel spring and the Bilsteins are only a standard travel unit. Hence you would be over stressing the top end components of the shocker. And so EFS springs were recommended as they would only lift the car 30-35mm as apposed to 50 odd and be well within the travel limits of the Bilies.

ANOTHER SPANER IN THE WORKS :x .

Dose this ring true with anyone out there, or not and why.

I have fitted numerous prado's with billies & lovells & had no problems.
Before anyone questions my post about stuffed billies. I did not supply or fit them .
The owner fitted the kit himself & fitted the spring seat upside down.

Why not ring Heasmans in Sydney, or the Vic distributor of Bilstein, they both have plenty of experience in dealing with all brands of spring

I think sometimes different people have better profit margins on some products, that tends to cloud their judgement a little

ATS used Lovells for a long while, shifted to another product for thier own reasons, but never bagged Lovells as part of the change, that says something I reckon

I spoke to ATS regarding the lovells issue I had,
They went away from Lovells cause they could not get the rate they wanted.

Rear end is easy to do .If you want extra rear wheel travel you can use 80s rear shocks.

Front requires removal of bellypan, swaybar, tierod ends.
              You will need spring compressors.
              Whole job should take 3hrs
I money is a problem you can use a lovells rear shock instead of a bilstein & still get a good ride.

              cheers

No mate not that I know of.
A good quality set will cost about $100 & last for years
There are cheaper ones around although I don't know how long they will last..
When you are ready to buy keep me in mind.
                  cheers

right - first off, I have resurrected this thread rather than start a new one, although my question could have fitted into many threads. Hope that keeps the mods off my back ...

I can get Billies/Lovells sent from the east coast to my door in Perth for $1269 (cheaper than I can get in Perth). Fitting is arranged ....

Good price? Seems to make sense to me, since the difference in cost will get me half a new BFG

Second question - the guy recommended that with the diesel and the alloy bar, it would be worth going the heavy duty on the front. Hadn't heard this before - comments??? experiences???

I don't have 2 batteries or winch, and will probably be a long while before I do...tyres are next and soon!

I had TFR-118 (medium) in the front of mine with alloy bar and dual batteries and I was happy with it. I only changed to TFR-118HD when I added the winch and cradle.

interesting as i am going through this exercise at the moment with billies and lovells

I've been told by 2 companies to get raised height only (not heavy duty) front and rear with polyairs in the rear.
Although $2100 fitted sounds a bit steep.

A question to Leachy.....Who installed yours????

                          Answer - absolute <<removed>>

The initial installation was done by a well know 4WD shop in Perth and while the components were correct ( I specd. those) the installation was complete stuff up. However, I didn't discover the installation issues until the suspension was removed to upgrade the front springs and put air bags in the rear. (the upgrade was in done in my garage with the help of several WA pradopoint members).
But I think the medium duty front springs are the go unless you have a winch.

ahhh, there's a whole story in itself.  I'll let Leachy explain.

Almost everyone I speak to says the medium (lift only) is enough without 2 batts and winch. I've just had one comment around the diesel being heavier up front and should be going for heavy duty. In saying that, Leachy's is a D4D.

edit - snap! posted at same time - Thanks Leachy - I just read your last line again... ops:

                              Leachy.
spose you cant mention the name,,,but you could always mention the suburb.

Anyway...are you happy with the setup & how much lift have you gained. Is there any problems with the rear billies down travel maxing out.
