  • Driveshaft cv binding after lift kit. Is this normal? Do I have aftermarket driveshafts?

    Hi guys and gals.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Plenty of info here. Thanks to every one.

Anyway here goes. I did lots of research before I purchased my lift kit. I decided on the KYB S4 front struts because of there long travel and their trade price was excellent. Also I opted for new upper strut plates as mine had done 170,000km. What I did notice is that the after market struts (roadsafe) lowered the strut 20mm or so due to there being no raised centre section.

So I fitted king spring HD springs to the front and ride height has settled at 807mm. Measured from bottom of rim to guard. 578mm from centre of hub. Droop measures at 900mm exactly on both sides measured the same way. About 93mm of down travel. HOWEVER the cv joints bind at about 3 points. Not so much that you can't spin the wheel, but it does have noticeable resistance. I thought a diff drop kit would help as I was VERY happy with that much droop. However the diff still moves slightly under pressure from the cvs. However it doesn't move much at all.

So, having only recently purchased the car, is the problem that it has had aftermarket driveshafts fitted? Will genuine help? Or is this much droop? Should I fit factory style strut tops to rectify? The shafts seem genuine looking at photos. Boots seem the same etc.. Should I just leave it and enjoy the extra droop, or will it likely damage the cv when I lift a wheel off road (it has traction control).

    Thanks in advance
    Jack

Post a photo of the CV angles looking straight on from the front. At 807mm with a diff drop the angles should be good. Let's have a look.

Sounds like you have the wrong strut plates.
Lots of these companies have no idea on what parts to supply.
The angle is way too much & if you took it offroad you will pop a c/v in no time.
The replacement ones should have the same hat height as o.e.

Hey mate. I thought I may have mucked up but I double checked our parts catalogue and that is the right part number and according to the packaging they have been packed and picked correctly.

Here is another example of this, however this person was happy with the outcome as his shocks were comparatively short to begin with. See page 2.

If you have short travel, you can use those hats to increase the travel significantly but it's not the right part regardless of what they have listed for it.
Toyota parts don't have a flat hat listed, so it's wrong, if you get my drift.
Also you have to then be care full of closed lengths, or you may damage the strut.
Other companies have those hats listed & their all making the same mistake.

              Hey jl88,

If you have the KYB S4 with open length 568mm, and you're using the Roadsafe strut cap (same as a 150 cap), then your effective open length is at 568+20 = 588mm, which is way past the open length of 570mm (with a standard 120 strut cap) where the CV starts binding on the 120.

Just use OEM strut caps for the 120, and everything will be ok.
