You can try reducing the length of the rod. The sensor is probably some kind of potentiometer. So the computer is looking for a particular voltage.
Be very careful as the sensor is very sensitive. Perhaps a workaround is to make an extension plate to the slotted bracket so that you have further downwards adjustment.
