  • Lower control arm ball joint leaking Grease

Hello everyone. I noticed when under the car that there is grease leaking from the bottom of the left LCA ball joint boot. Just wondering the urgency to get it fixed as I can't get it done straight away and need to do a 2K run next week . I cant locate a split yet but as it appears to be coming from the bottom I assume no dirt & moisture is getting in.

Forget my prior comment in brackets about giving it a squirt of grease. Looks like they are sealed, silly me :-(

Ok, moving right along. If I replace it myself any recommendations regarding a suitable press kit? I see a number on offer but not sure 1. what I need for the current job 2. what would serve me well for any other jobs that may come up for a little extra.

I just checked with Toyota parts to see what the price of a ball joint is. Typical, they only sell the whole LCA :-(
Anyone have suggestions where I can get a good quality replacement?

I don't believe there is a genuine Toyota ball joint available anywhere. It's either a complete LCA or aftermarket ball joint.

Have you checked that the ball joint is actually stuffed?

Jack up the tyre a couple of inches off the ground. Use a crowbar under the tyre to lift it up and down. Watch for play in the ball joint.

I don't believe it is stuffed yet. I don't think the rubber has been split for very long. I will check as you suggested.
But I assume I can't leave it for too long?
I'll let you know if I can see any play :-)
                  Thanks Mate.

Just a follow up. I checked for play. It seemed Ok. I might have a go at replacing the dust boot :-)

I just pulled out both LCAs and had a look at the ball joints. Didn't seem to have play after 300k km. It is a bit looser than the new ones.

I bought this set to remove the ball joints.

                      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/203507216455

The one on the top left worked.

Thanks mate. Cheaper than the Ball Joint press kit I was looking at. Nice to know the kit will work :-)
