  • Rear end clunk/bang (Spring Spacers)

    G'day all,

Does anyone out there with rear spring spacers experience any clunking on small and/or large bumps? I've had a good look and cant find anything loose, so I'm thinking it must be something to do with the 20mm spacers or my shocks.

Would love to hear from anyone with rear spacers.

    Thanks a heap.

    Cheers,

    RT

Re: Rear end clunk/bang (Spring Spacers)

I also have a clunk in the rear of the vehicle - and I know of the tailshaft issue, however, I am starting to believe that there may also be something else...

I am not home at the moment and cannot check this - but i was starting to think that it may actually be a loose fuel tank mount. Reason for this thought - had a suspension lift recently, and my fuel tanks only had approx 40 litres total, and the rear was quiet. the company doing the lift did not mention anything regarding damage to the suspension on the car at the time of fitment. Filled the car up for the recent trip to Goowla with the SA PPer's and notice that with the extra weight in the back that the cluck had become very noticable again!!! And it did sound suspension like...

So when I get home after christmas - the mounting points for the tanks is where i will be next looking for this fault...

Thanks mate, do you have spacers in the rear? And can you elaborate on the 'tailshaft issue' a little further?

I will be checking my fuel tank mounts when I get home this arvo.

Try the search for the tail-shaft - it's been covered quite a bit for the 120 series...

Re: Rear end clunk/bang (Spring Spacers)

Checked my tank mounts and they all seem to be fine. The tailshaft issue seems to be starting and stoping, so I dont think its that.

Mine is very similar to this: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3958&start=0

But I also have clunking for small bumps also, like corrugations etc.

            Hi Rusty
Just a thought but it may pay to check you spare wheel on the rear door for security.
Also do you have your tow bar tounge fitted?
            Cheers Troy

              Another thing to check..
I had a random clunk in the back somewhere seemingly connected to suspension. Turned out to be the rear torsion / sway bar. It was a bit loose. Tightened it up and all is now quiet and smooth.

                Hey mate,

Yep tried the spare wheel and pulled it off and put it back on, all good. Have taken the tow bar on and off but no difference :x

Yeh bud I thought it might have been the sway bar also, took it off and there is still no difference.

If I cant figure it out I will drop it into Pedders next week and get them to have a look. No doubt they will say ya shouldnt have spacers in there but we'll see.

Check the spring location on the axle seat. The end of the coil wire should be against the stop/raised section of the spring seat. Also have a quick look to see if the top is correctly inside the mount/pressed section.

                    G'day Mick,

I have checked the position of the top and bottom of the spring and all seems good. Although during the week I will jack up one side of the vehicle or park it so it will flex and see if the spring has moved at all.

Couldnt be anything to do with the shock could it mate?

Thanks a heap for your help.

                    Cheers,

Could be. You can check them without fully removing them. Just drop them off the lower mount, you can then check the bushing, and compress/extend them and check for binding/dead spots.

Always difficult when you can't see the vehicle or hear the noise for yourself. I figure you're reasonably mechanically minded and have checked all the obvious things.

One cause of noise I had personally on my Prado was caused by the stone shields on the shocks (ARB style). I had them too far around after a shock change and under articulation one side was actually getting hit by the balance weights on the inside of the rim.

Do the coils have marks in the powdercoat/paint where they have been touching together ?

                        It could be "coil binding"

Do you mean when the coil is compressed it is binding on itself mate?
