Did a bit more research & yes General are part of Continental, much the same as B F Goodrich are part of Michelin & Firestone are now a string of Bridgestone. The list goes on Goodyear / Dunlop/ Sumitomo & Sava, same umbrella.
I can,t remember which American Off road tyre company Pirelli own?
That,s just a few of bed partners, there's heaps more.

I know I'm getting off the track, but the brain kicked in last night about which other tyre companies Pirelli own.
For those who may be interested?
They are:- Armstrong, Courier, Ceat & Metzeler.

I had the Grabbers fitted last Friday and have done just over 1000kms of mixed driving both on and off road.
The tread pattern looks very similar to the BF Goodrich A/T. The tread is 13mm deep and comes with a 60000km mileage guarantee but you must return to the dealer every 10000km as per Cooper's guarantee.
Tarmac Roads
The noise level up to speeds of 100km does not seem to be problem with hardly any difference to the Dunlopes.Grip levels on both wet and dry roads is good with no hint of understeer when cornering. Slightly less road surface feed back through the steering wheel.
Dirt / Gravel Roads
Loads more grip than I had before with better turn in and held the line better through the corners. Felt like the centre diff was locked when it was not.

Is there any information on the sidewall of the tyre in relation to the number of plies (tread and sidewall) and whether steel, nylon or whatever?

The sidewall is 2 ply Polyester.
The tread is 6 ply 2 Polyester, 2 Steel, 2 Nylon.
Speed rated S.
Load rated 112.
Made in Czech Republic

Apart from the sidewall being underconstructed for severe off road use I think the recall notice is enough to put us off, sort of smells of the Firestone debacle a few years ago that caused numerous fatalities and huge litigation battles. Count me out.

I know it is always a bit of a worry when you read recall notices but that was three rears ago.
They where a different size & it would be very ,very unlikely that any faulty tyres would be dumped here. That size was not even made by General back then.
Just for the record I cannot think of any tyre company that hasen't had a separation problem at sometime or another (even Michelin)
It is often as to whether they admit they have a problem or not & then what do they do to rectify same.

Are there any 265/65x17 tyres that are more than 2 ply sidewalls at present, in any brand???

Just got a reply to an e-mail I sent to General Tires concerning the tyre recall. They stated that the recall was for the Grabber A/T tyre manufactured in the USA until the year 2000. The tyres that I purchased are Grabbers A/T'2 which are a different Tyre and made at the Continental Tyre factory in Europe.
I don't think it is how many ply's is the problem but how thick they are. The sidewalls are very stiff compared to the Grandtreks as I checked them out before they were mounted on the rims. The Prado sits noticeably higher with little sidewall bulge present and my drive to work is 1.5 km shorter over 58km running 36 psi.
Lets hope Jacto is wrong because I set out on an 8 week outback tour on Saturday and just had a 6th tyre fitted to my 2nd spare rim.

Now this is a question I wish I knew the answer to. There's plenty in 70 series but I can't find any in 65 series. It's very frustrating. C'mon Coopers, get cracking and make a ST (LT) in 265/65R17 or even an ATR (LT) :!:

There seems to be a very similar issue here in Britain, i.e. very little choice.
Whilst the standard Dunlops seem great on the road, I'm not impressed off road, and they are particularly poor in snow! The best alternative here also seems to be the General Grabber AT2s. They have a pretty good reputation and General have been well known over here for years.
When the time comes to change I will be getting Generals unless by some miracle BFGoodrich have bought out an A/T for the 120 by then but it doesn't look likely.
By the way, what sort of mileage are you guys getting from the Dunlops? I've covered 26000 miles (I think that is about 42000 kms) and there is still loads of tread left, particularly on the rears. The front outsides are wearing quickest, but I'm going to swap them around again to even everything out a bit.

I took the plunge as well to give these tyres a go. Due to square edge tyre pattern and extra tread my hard spare wheel cover will not fit. Also they don,t come with white lettering on the side. Have only put a 1000k on them, will post later after i have put some ks on them.

Has anybody considered any of the Maxxis tyres ?

On their website they mention that both the All Terrain & the Bighorn are available in LT255/65R17. If this is correct, would it not alleviate the problems of going over 15mm OD with 265/70's and also the lack of other brands having a light truck tyre in 265/65 ????

I have the AT2's now on the Prado for ~ 4.000 km, street only until now.

So far I am very happy. Good ride, car looks great (265/70 with white lettering), the spare still fits (under the car), the price was attractive (115 Euro/pc here in Germany).

Would I buy them again? For sure....
