  • Speedy Grande wheels

I was wondering if anyone here has these wheels and can comment on their quality and likeness to the factory 120 series alloys.
I am looking to buy one as a second spare, have been looking on ebay and at the wreckers for a while and not seen any come up for sale, or at least for a reasonable price.
I went up to my local Tyrepower store this morning to get a price, for the 17" to suit a 120 series was $199 which I thought was quite reasonable.
I would also be open to any other suggestions as to what others have done for a second spare.
    Thanks,
    Justin.

The Speedy Grande used to come with flanged nuts like the OEM but that changed to tapered nuts. This meant that you had to carry a separate set of nuts.

as for the price, it's pretty good for an alloy. You can get a genuine steel for less than that, around $100 to 150.

      Thanks for that amts,

Where can you get the genuine steel for that price? as its only for a spare i would be more than happy with one of them.

A little off topic, how far off are your next batch of spacers? i'm looking to get some MT ATZ 4 ribs and was thinking about ordering some soon.

You can get the steelies from Toyota.
When I enquired from a local tyre shop about aftermarket steelies, their comment was that the Toyota ones were better in terms of geometry as they are pressed, whereas the aftermarket ones are rolled then welded. So the Toyota ones are better for balancing.

As for the rear tyre spacers, I'm waiting on the machinist to finish the current batch. There are still a few spacers available. http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post290691

Genuine Steel rims "can" be difficult to get. My father in law has been chasing some for his 17" 100 series and had lots of difficulty but after quite a while has finally procured enough for a trip he is doing end of the week.

There are some minor differences between the Speedy Grande and genuine 120 Prado alloy. The centre caps are not exchangable. Well, that is not entirely true but I wouldn't guarentee that the genuine Toyota centre cap would still be sitting in the Speedy rim after a spin. I've tried a few of mine in the Speedy and they are loose. As Andrew indicate the wheel nuts are tappered. I recall looking into this and apparently they changed this after the first twelve months. Not sure why. The finish on mine is slightly different. it's like the Speedy has a plastic coating or varnish to add additional protection but I can't notice it now (have the spare roatetd as part of a six tyre rotation and they all look the same except for the (centre cap). From memory the balance weights are approximatley the same on the Grande as the genuine but there is no science behind that. Will vary from wheel to wheel.

Thanks for that, I will let you know when I need them, hopefully I'll get organised by the time your current batch is done.

As the others have said, nuts are different and centre caps, other than that I can't tell the difference. I have 3 of them and none have the plastic coating that Nick mentioned the rim itself looks identical and is as good as the original IMO.

These wheels actually come in 17 x 7.5 with ET10 (for Ford Ranger) as well as the standard Prado ET30. I would love to be able to try a couple of the ET10 rims on the front to see if they still clear the mudflaps, a bit wider stance on the Prado would be a good thing I reckon. Might need to find a Ranger owner and become his best friend

              Cheers Andrew

Thanks rags, I might head down to CMI Toyota tomorrow and check them out, I didn't even consider going to Toyota for them as most of their spare parts are ridiculously expensive.

Are the wheel nuts for the steel wheels the same as the alloys?

I'm considering getting a spare toyota steel rim for a extra spare.

                    Thanks,

No. The steelies require taper wheel nuts.
Another thing to check if you do get some spare taper wheel nuts is that they have the same head size as the standard wheel nuts (21mm) because they are also available in 19mm. It could be very inconvenient if you were relying on the stanard wheel brace which will only work with 21mm wheel nuts.

I spoke to Newcastle Toyota today and was quoted $150 per wheel.
Not a bad price for genuine toyota i guess

I went into Bob Jane at Seaford SA this arvo looking for tyres for my commodore and asked about the Speedy Grande whilst I was in there, $165 each, I think I'll be getting one of those for a spare and maybe the genuine Toyota steel rims for the camper.

Can someone put my brain out of its misery.....very confused...

I need some prado wheels for the Camper. Happy for them to be steel but want them interchangable with the 120.

I am correct in thinking that ANY wheel off a 120 (all 17") have the same offset. Or are some of the steel wheels different?

Are they all 7.5" wide or are some narrower.

Sorry for all the Q's but I have a headache and cant think straight
