On the Pirelli Web Site it indicates that the ATR offers a greater range of use than the AT ie better off road and better on road than the AT

Hi Spender Again,Originally posted by spender againAny idea what the R stands for - All Terrain R?
I've had a set of ATR's on my Cruiser, and I believe that the R stands for Reinforced. At least, that is what the Cooper guy told me when I was looking to get them to replace the (older) Cooper AT.
Not sure exactly what that means in reality. But if the name is correct, I would expect the tyre carcass to be a bit stonger than the earlier Cooper AT.
Cheers, Bes.Currently driving 100 series V8 Landcruiser - Will be changing to a D4D Prado in 2008 - ordering soon !

The ATR in pirelli actually stands for "Another Tyre Revolution" this was told to me by the national marketing manager for pirelli as i purchased the first set of 245/70/16's when i had my jeep and i was talking to him one day about them before i brought them.Originally posted by spender againHopefully the ATRs will go better than the ATs.

See Email From Pirelli concerning the "R" in ATR
Hi,
An interesting question…………….changing from AT to ATR has been done by many tyre manufacturers. Some say it is for 'replacement', some say 'radial' (all our tyres like this are radial), some say it is for 'road'.
When we launched ATR we said it stood for 'another tyre revolution'. We use 2 different words today if asked; either revolution or road.
We use word 'road' because the development parameters of the tyre were for the same off road capability but better on road, especially noise.

There are two Klugers and a Prado Grande in our family. One Kluger has Pirelli ATs the other, Michelin (a highway pattern). The ATs are noisy on the road and the Michelins whisper quiet. The Prado has Pirelli ATRs. They too are extremely quiet. If you are looking for quiet tyres for your Prado, the Pirelli ATRs will not disappoint. Apart from that, the ATRs handle well in the wet and particularly so on glassy tar!Redclaw

Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR
Ok I have been offered 5 Pirelli Scorpion 265/70/R17 ATR's for $300.00 a piece. Pretty sure that's the ones in the photo. Seems they have changed quite dramatically since I saw them last. I don't remember the Scorpions I had a few years ago looking like this. Are these new?? Can anyone tell me anything about them?? It's either these or BFG AT's at $340.00 a tyre.
Don't know what the Heck to do!!

Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR
They r a beautiful tyre on road and I found them as good as the bridgie 694 offroad if not better, the 70 series is a light truck version as well. I liked them and would have brought them had their been a light truck version in the 65 series but their isn't so I got the bridgies.Rob

Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR
Yep Hutch that's right, the 70's are Light Truck construction. I was all set on getting BFG's but this offer has thrown a spanner in the works. They look a little more Highwayish than I was after, but geez I suppose they aren't that bad. Guess most of their work will be blacktop anyhow, disappointingly. HECK! I still can't decide! If only those side lugs were a little chunkier!# 2007 D4D GX # Full Privacy Tint # Flinders Red # 2 x HID LightForce 240 Blitz # ARB Winch Bar # Alloy Rims # Hilux Washer Jets # Stebel Nautilus Compact Truck Horn # ARB Alloy Roof Rack # ARB Dual Battery System # Charcoal Rough Country Canvas Seat Covers # Suspension:Autocraft Bilstein Shocks/Struts & Ridepro Coils # L.E.D Side Marker Lights # ARB Onboard Air # Pirelli Scorpion LT ATR 265/70's #--Custom 3"exhaust---

Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR
Pat Callinan took his sponsership Scorpion ATRs across the Canning in series two. Didn't report any issues but then if there was an issue it would have been erased. I did notice however that he had three spares on his vehicle (rear door and two on roof rack) plus at least one spare tyre on the camper he towed.Originally posted by IRON-PAWWYep Hutch that's right, the 70's are Light Truck construction. Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR
Hmmm Interesting. As they were sponsored though, anything bad happening, as you say, would be conveniently left off the report. I suppose you can't fault someone for taking 3 spares along the Canning Stock Route, I think I might be tempted to do the same. These look a tad flimsy to me, when compared to the BFG's. But then, at that price they're hard to fault. I guess either way is horses for courses. Though Scorpions are usually $380.00 a piece or so I'm told, which might be a pain if I end up putting a stake through one or something and need to replace it. Maybe a bit more rubber on the BFG's as well just by looking at them both. Pfffffft it's a lineball call at the moment.......# 2007 D4D GX # Full Privacy Tint # Flinders Red # 2 x HID LightForce 240 Blitz # ARB Winch Bar # Alloy Rims # Hilux Washer Jets # Stebel Nautilus Compact Truck Horn # ARB Alloy Roof Rack # ARB Dual Battery System # Charcoal Rough Country Canvas Seat Covers # Suspension:Autocraft Bilstein Shocks/Struts & Ridepro Coils # L.E.D Side Marker Lights # ARB Onboard Air # Pirelli Scorpion LT ATR 265/70's #--Custom 3"exhaust---

Going from Grandtreks, you will think you have muddies off road, i was happy with the ones on my jeep, did some pretty tough tracks in that car and no issues.Originally posted by IRON-PAWWHmmm Interesting.
