    Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

Very sage advice. I will indeed be removing the Grandtrek AT20's. As I'm going for the 70 profiles, I might just keep the Dunlop's in the garage in case I get inspected a little too closely. Still a bit of rubber on them but their time is up. Never really felt comfortable with em on some of the tracks we've been over, they're decent enough for what they are, but I really think its time for some LT's. With the $300.00 price tag, I think I might go the Scorpions. I'll wait for Monday and see if I still feel the same way though. Either way It'll be an upgrade. 8)

      Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

Ok. Well in the end the price on the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's was too good to pass up.

Interesting thing though. I called Bob Jane's in Osborne Park asking for their best price on Pirelli Scorpions. $370.00 per tyre they say. So then I said I'd gotten a quote from Swan Tyres not far away for $300.00 per tyre, which was the complete truth. Could they match it I asked. I fully expected them to say "no" because it was a pretty severe price drop. I nearly fell off the chair when the guy on the phone said "yeah, ok, we can do that." They are a good outfit there, friendly, and customer oriented, and I trust them with my vehicle. Plus, I can sit in their waiting area and watch em go about it all 8) . So it just goes to show, If you never ask, you never know. This current generation of Scorpions look the goods, a far different beast than they used to be that's for sure. I think though, if push came to shove out bush, the BFG would have been the better tyre, but I don't know how much there'd be in it. One things for certain though, I'm glad the Grandtreks are gone. 8) Still gottem in the shed for a rainy day, if one should eventuate.

Photos are terrible, from my phone camera. But you get a pixellated Idea of what's going on. And yes, I do have some suspension tweaks to do up front.

Don't look too bad IronPaw. The tread pattern reminds my of the Bridgies 694:

Should work out for you pretty well.

Looks good IP. And great quality from a camera phone. Oh and we seem to have the same taste for alloy wheels.
Are you going to update your signature block now that you have decided not to go with BFGs?

This is stressful stuff trying to pick a tyre :? ....It's time for me to change the so called 'GrandCraps'....thanks to this forum (and others) I've talked myself out of the Cooper ATR's as its hard to get a good word on them and I'm zoning in on the Pirelli Scorpions. BJTM Gouger Street quoted me $370 (fitted/ Balanced etc) today also for the Pirelli's but also had the B/Stone D694s on special for $300 and said it was a similar tyre/ tread (as schaffer said) and represented good value for money.....that just didn't help me as I was getting so close to pulling the trigger on the Pirelli's.....I know the salesman would have a motavation to try and steer me towards the B/Stone D694s but it wasn't helpful...someone pls tell me to just buy the Pirellis if you like em!!, or should i be considering the B/Stones?

Noted Iron-Paww that BJTM sold em to you for $300 and if i can get em to do similar (or close) i think it will then be a no brainer....

Doc, i have had both and you can hardly tell the difference, the prielli on road maybe slightly better, not $70 per tyre though. If you get them for much the same price then go for it, i have gone bridgies for the second time as they had the LT in 65 series, so i got a tougher tyre and still legal.

                  Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

Geez! How did I not remember to do my signature block. *Ahem* doo de doooo, how embarrassing.

Yeah went the white lettering. Damn trendy mate! 8)

Yeah it's not easy picking tyres, that's for sure. You will never find a consistent message about any particular brand. Look around and you'll find horror stories for any particular one, and then there's the bloke who's driven over broken glass with em for 50 years without a hiccup. At the end of the day, I think Hutch is right, the Pirellis and Bridgestones are pretty similar, and either one would be a good step up from the Dunlop Grandtreks. I think you'd be struggling to pick a difference between them in real world situations. But another indicator is just to look at what everyone else has got. The mob won't tolerate shoddy tyres!

The guy at Swan Tyres here in Perth did say that there'd been a special on the Pirelli Scorpions and they had bought a heap, and still had some in stock for the $300.00 price. So I suspect that Bob Jane's also had stock left over from the 'special', and that might be why they agreed to the $300.00 price as well. But just guessing.

For anyone else in Perth, as of the weekend just gone, Swan Tyres in Osborne Park still had 11 or so Pirelli Scorpion ATR's at the $300.00 price point. Might be worth ringing to confirm, and then put the hard word on your local dealer like I did. I know for a fact that my local Bob Jane's sourced the 5th tyre from another BJ shop, still at the $300.00 price. So might be worth checking if you're interested in the Scorpions.

Apparently the shaping on the sidewall of the Pirelli's is some sort of "mud clearing" or "sand clearing" design. That's how it was explained to me, but I'm not really sure how that's meant to work. I guess, but it seems to me that looks might be the primary factor at play there. Still, a few looks never hurt anyone 8). You might get a little extra traction from em but not a heck of a lot you'd have to say. Just looking at Schaffer's pic of the D694, the Pirelli's now have more aggressive side lugs which you can see in the pics I posted, whereas the 694 in that pic not so much? Real world difference that would make?? I guess it depends where you use em. And if I remember rightly, not like the BFG chunky side lugs. Tread pattern is quite similar to the 694's just looking at them both. Honestly, it's a lineball call between them.

I think if you're saving $70.00 per tyre then that counts for a lot. As Hutch says, any difference between the tyres probably isn't worth spending the extra for. But if you just plain want a particular tyre, then you can't ignore that either! 8)

Yep AMTS, don't mind these alloys. Simple enough design but look the goods.

                    Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

I have had these on for about 18 months now - really happy with the tyre. Quiet on the bitumen and much better handling than the Grandtreks. Mostly sand and rocky trail stuff and really good however not really tested in the mud.

Word of caution for everyone - there are 2 types of Pirelli ATRs. One is a 265/70/17 - Passenger and the other is a 265/70/17 LT. Distinguished by a P or LT before or after the size on the side wall. I know this because I intentionally ordered the LT (10 ply construction vs the P = 6 ply) and the tyre bloke fitted the passenger spec tyre. :x I had to take it back the next day to him to get these P tyres replaced with the LT tyres. So I know a tyre dealer in Adelaide who has 5 very new Pirelli ATRs in 6 ply that I am sure he would sell for a song if anyone wants them - they have been gathering dust in his shop for 18 months now! Just PM me and I will send you his details.

                    Cheers

Don't want to highjack this thread talking about the D694s but I finally went with these today. No Pirelli Scorpions (ex Pirelli Melb.) available to the end of the month and I couldn't wait as I've got to do a rather large round trip of Adel --> Charleville --> Wodonga --> Melb --> Adel in the next couple of weeks. BJTM dropped thier price a further $30 on the scorpions but availabilty was the issue. The Bridgestones are a huge improvement on the Grand Craps, and you dont realize how bad the craps were until they're gone. The D694s are comparatively more audible, or maybe I'm just sensative as it was a huge critera on the selection of my new tyres.

thanks for the info/ advice guys.

What pressures have they out in them, can make a difference to ride etc, i always had 36 psi for the passenger bridgies now with the Light trucks (heavier Sidewall) i am running 34 psi.

Hmmmmm Doc, sounds like 38 PSI is the 'chart' pressure the tyre fitters use for the 265/70's. Just by the feel of it, I'm thinking I could drop a few PSI at the moment. But I'll see how I get on for now. I dunno if it's just me telling myself, but I swear the Prado now feels a LOT more solid on the road. I can't tell you exactly why, but I seem to be sticking corners like I'm on rails or something, and it's like there's not a skerrick of movement when going straight. There was always an element of wander there with the Grandtrek's fitted, nothing much, but certainly there. The type of thing you just correct for on autopilot without even thinking, with slight adjustments on the steering wheel. That appears almost gone now, or almost gone. As soon as I got in with the Scorpions fitted, I noticed a definite road handling improvement, even at slower speeds around town. But I thought I was just convincing myself of it because I knew I had new tyres. Kind of like a placebo effect. Still notice it now though even a week later with every drive, so there's gotta be something.

I went the LT's with mine. I have a workout in store for em. 8)
