  • Pirelli Scorpion ATR

    Guys

Just Dumped the GrandCraps Last Night and 8) 8) 8) Got my self 4 of the Pirelli Scorpion ATR photo attached , couldn't believe the difference excellent handling, the rig floats on clouds not drives, no noise excellent braking power. I drove them for 150K last night -easy to do in Dubai -

Keep in mind I only had 25K on my previous tyres only due to toe-in and rubbish tyres coped together to chew the old ones. But indeed even comparing those to my mate's 2007 4K rig ones which I drove today , they are excellent He wants to change his now (he he  )

Give them ago guys , and I will keep you updated on how they go with extra K's . Cheers

I read a review on these tyres in one of the 4x4 magazines here in Oz. From memory they rated right up there in the top two for an AT tyre I think. I will be interested to see how they go.

Would be interested to see how the milage is, i had a set on the Jeep for 11000 klms before i sold it, beautiful to drive on. However check out the tread depth between the outside lugs compared to say the tread depth in the centre of the tyre, what worried me was as they wore down, is that the outside lug would become a slick.

Good luck with them Mansour - let us know what you think of them after you've had them for a while.

I'll be keen to hear this too, i'm guessing i've got about 12 months left on my Coopers and i doubt i'll get them again so these could be a contender!

This is the one Hoppy was talking about
            http://www.4wdmonthly.com.au/tips_tyres.php
Pirellis come out top; Grandtreks middle  (I know it is just a few blokes opinion - but hey no different to the rest of this forum )

Mansour - you've had the scorpions on a month or so - what do you think?

I have a mate with them fitted to a landcruiser and uses them offroad a lot - loves them, but suggests the sidewalls might be softer than some of the other brands.

              Feed Back

Based on my trial, here it goes
1- The tires are quieter in low speeds (<100Km/Hr) but noisier than the Dunlop after (120KM/Hr) - I guess this is due to the pattern, but this is ok as you can feel the difference in grip and traction and better braking performance :P
2- The Sand performance suggested by Australian 4WD is true in case of using 15PSI pressure , put that to 12 PSI (As recommended by the dealer here in Dubai) and you'll love these ones for the crawl ability and downhill descends that they can put 8)
3- The wet track braking and gripping is unbelievable , I drove through a gravel based valley full of a foot of water and wouldn't believe it, I had to pass three times until I was sure of what I felt was true they drove like dry. I have to redo this to be sure 100% of this but you will know what I mean once you try them the wet performance is simply superb :P
4- Cleaning the tyres after a good 4WD trip is tough stuff; you have to attack the tyre from different angles to ensure a thorough clean between the grooves and patterns. But hay its part of the fun to clean the rig
5- Long distance tarmac driving is a pleasure, less heat than the usual! , although this was a non-stop 400KM trip at 135KM/Hr. (Fuel consumption stayed at 14.2 L/100KM with head winds against us) so I guess this was OK
So in conclusion; they are less agile than the Grand Treks but definitely more reliable, better built, and performs far superbly than the Grand Treks, So far So Good AM happy with them
I will be testing the rig more rigorously on 15.Oct in the Dubai desert and will know they ins and outs of these tyres by then, and I will keep you posted.. Cheers
              :P

                Congrats !!
Sounds like you have made a great choice. I am sure they will look after you well based on one of our club members has a set on his Disco and if he owns them, then they are a great tyre. He is one of those kinds of people if you know what I mean 8)

Qick Fit TSV has these things at $A299. Anyone find them at a better price?

Would love some more info about these tyres. The Australian 4WD Mag article was quite interesting.

Our roads are often covered in water, and need something that will deal with torrential downpours.

                      Chrispy185,
You will find more about the Pirelli ATR in a earlier posting:-

A work associate has just fitted a set to a Landcruiser & is very impressed, but bear in mind his work is mainly towing on highways, good dirt roads & grass.

                      Cheers,

Mansour, tell me how your ATRs have performed wear-wise. I am in the process of making my final decision on these or 694s. Any other experiences out there? All views are welcome. My GTs have lasted 42K and they are at the absolute limit as of today!!

                          Hay Guys

Sorry it's been a while , I was so busy in the last three weeks

Redclaw mate, go ahead with these Perillies. I went to a avalley bashin 2 weeks a go and the rock performance was amazing.

I had to cross a few creeks with some running water and I still can't believe how these tyres can handle the wet  can someone else reconfirm this please.

As for the wear I only lost the bristles that comes with new tyres at most outer-edges of the tyres. Also a few roundation (Execuse my english) at the those areas instead of the straight edges (this is standrad with Prado's infamous turning / toe-in problem) - but the dealer assured me that with proper tyre rotation (recommended 5K rounds) + Toe-in checking he gurantees the tyres for three years or 60K even with Dubai's weather (50C+ in the summer) and the high speeds that we drive at here.

My judgement are still the same , they performed excellently, although as a side note it seems that they lose about 2psi of pressure evey 10 days of standard city driving, so when I vist a pertrol pump I check the pressure all the time (Dealer recommends 33 standrad , 36 loaded , 12 off-road)

Whishing you the best with yoiur new tyres :P

-PS I will post some pics of the trip once I download them from the camera :P :P :P

Sorry mates I forgot to add that I had so far done 4000 KM on these tyres

                            Cheers

Thanks for the thumbs-up, Mansour. The ATRs are the way I will go though my experience of 694s in a mates truck (D4D) in some pretty interesting terrain recently was positive. Road noise on tarmac was ok with the 694s but I did expect a little less. A tight decision in the end.
