  • New Tyres - Advice and guidance

I am currently in the UK running the Grandtrek factory fitted tyres on my Prado 4ltr Grande, imported from QLD.

With this regard, I am looking at replacing these with a new set and like the tread on the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A tyres. I think the increased tread pattern will be better for off road and for snow conditions here in the UK, until I export the Prado back to Oz.

I have a few issues and hope the more knowledgable members can assist.

My current tyres are 265/65 R17 112S rated.

From my research I am unsure if the BF are available in this size and have only seen them in 265/70 R17 and 285/70 R17.

I am looking at bringing my Prado back to Oz possibly to WA and would appreciate if anyone can advise if the upgrades to 265/70 or possibly 285/70 would be legal in QLD or WA.

Would also appreciate if anyone can advise on the consequences of the various upgrade tyres on the vehicle. I have noted some members reporting change in speedo calibration.

Any help or guidance greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

BFG. ATs are available in 265/65R17. It. Is just not listed on their website.

As for legalities, I think it is still illegal but the guys from those states should be able to provide input. Hopefully, NCOP would be incorporated by the time you get back. However, as you would need to get your car inspected when it comes in and also for rego I would stick with the standard when you bring it in.

265/70R17 is definitely good for the 120. Your speedo will be back to being spot on.

There might be interference issues with the 285s. And you will notice a bigger loss in power. Fuel economy will be worse the bigger the tyre you use.

      Thanks for the post.

I have tried many tyre shops here in the UK but can't get hold of the BF tyres in the 265/65 R17. No sure if it is a stupid UK thing but they seem to only start at 265/70 over here.

Are you saying that if I bring the Prado back to Oz and it looks like WA now, they would not pass a safety test with the 265/70 tyres ??

If that is so then I might have to just put on a set of Cooper ATR tyres as there the next available 4x4 tyre.

Can anyone else shed any light on the legal issues in WA and if this is the same in QLD.

Incidentally, was wondering if I could use a personal plate purchased in QLD in WA ???

      Any advice welcomed.

I use 275/65/17 Geolander. From memory they are only 15mm increase in overall diameter and just a bit wider and I love them.

I don't know a great deal about tyres but can't understand where the 15mm increase in diameter comes from if it has the same 65 tyre wall height. I understand the tyre is 10mm wider across the tread but how does this equate to the 15mm diameter increase.

The second number is the sidewall profile as a percentage of the width. There's a new AT3 pattern that supersedes the ATR.

Just looked up on the Cooper UK web site and there is no AT3 shown. I assume that it just hasn't arrived in the UK as yet.

Also just looked at the yokohama tread pattern and it looks quite good that is the A/T s model. Might see if I can get a price for them as in reflection on the previous advice of safety tests etc. once the Prado arrives back in Oz, it might just be safer to put on the same size tyre as the factory supplied Grandtreks.

How about a 275/65R17 BFG AT? No legal issues there. Just need a spacer for the spare tyre carrier. A 265/70R17 also requires the spacer.

Not sure about a spacer !!!! What are these and are they legal ??

I thought if increasing the tyre width from 265/65 R17 to 275/65 R17 it would require a bigger/ wider alloy wheel??

Are these spacers widely available ?

Spacer would only be for mounted the spare tyre on the rear door as the rubber rubs the paint. Not sure the UK version of the prado would require this however, as you have the spare mounted under the car, where we have our sub fuel tank.

its not a spacer to increase the track of the vehicle.

My Prado is a 2008 Aussie model, so spare is mounted on rear door. I exported it to the UK but just got work back in Oz so will probably be shipping it back in the new year.

So what size can I increase to if I go down that road, and still be legal in Oz. Will this require new alloy wheels.

Would welcome any comments from guys in WA

It is generally accepted that you can go one size greater than what is stated on the tyre plate of the car, which is located below the hook on the passenger side front door when you open it. However, an increase of more than 1" diameter is considered illegal. technically, a 265/70 MTZ puts you over the limit, but for one tyre size, it all generally goes unnoticed. However, if the car requires inspection on arrival back into oz, then it will be noted!

What size tyres were fitted when you imported it to the UK, the 165/65r17 you state in the first post are small? Or is that a typo?

Custom plates ordered from QLD would not be legal in WA generally speaking.

Each state has its own emblems, styles, and numbering convensions. That being said, it may be possible to have plates made in QLD that are suitable for WA, but the actual number plate alpha-numeric description would still need to be "purchased/registered" in WA prior to use.

Don't understand this legal issue. If you replace the tyres with the same size tyre as the factory fitted Grandtreks surely they must be legal if replacing with other tyres of the same size and speed rating, or higher speed rating.
