  • advice on tyres on a budget

    Hi all,

I'm looking for advice on a new set of tyres for my 120. I do about 85% highway, 10% gravel/corrugation and maybe 5% beach at best. My current tyres are the standard Prado ones and are in desperate need of tread.

I'm really only toying with about $1000-1200 max, and I probably don't do enough off-road to justify them at the moment. I'll be towing a camper trailer.

So I'm looking for suggestions on good tyres that will go the distance. Ultimately I'm not precious about brands just good advice.

    cheers
    Jim

With your driving profile it would be hard to beat the Bridgestone D697.

Thinking outside the square, if you're on a budget, offer somebody here who is taking delivery of a new Prado $600-800 to take their new tyres...

There was a thread recently where the topic starter was buying Cooper AT3 for $280.00 per tyre from memory. If you could purchase the Cooper ATR for the same price, then they would be the tyre for you IMO. With them, you would get 4 tyres for under $1200.00 that would probably last you over 100,000kms if rotated when required.

As the others said, for 1200 u could get coopers, Bridgestone or even have a look at the Maxxis from
            BJT.

Agree with Davros on the usage description, however I just fitted a set of General Brand Tyres. They are the Grabber AT2 very similar to a bfg AT but supposedly stronger construction. Paid $281 for 265/65/17's. A mate of mine is Alice says they are popular up there, wear and grip pretty well.

About to head off for a while up around the Bungles and Kimberly region, will report back late Sept!! (I did say I will be off for a while..)

x2 for the Geolander. I put them on after seeing how happy my mate and his father in law were with theirs. For the blacktop they are still pretty quiet and good in the wet. To get in and out of where we live is about 500k's of corrugations, so run the right pressure and there are no worries there. And on the beach, they bag out beautifully at about 16psi... so you save money by not needing maxtrax
Like you said, you're not worried about brand but Yokies have been around for a long time as well. Try a 'web quote' at Bob Jane. I got the quote from them, and a few calls to different tyre shops to see what other prices i could get, was told if i could 'get that price' to go with it. That ebay price doesn't look too bad either.

If you want to save a dollar then put an add in the wanted section here for some Dunlop Grandtreks, loads of people take them off and are looking to get rid of them in as new condition. I sold my 5 for $750 to another PP member which was a good deal for me and for him.

                        Cheers Andrew

That's the second suggestion to go in this direction and given your usage you don't need to go with A/T's. So a good call by a couple of fellas who have been around a while, and not needing to spend over $1000 if don't really need to sounds like a good option

Check out the Silverstone Estevia - Highway Terrain or the Federal Couragia AT. On a side note I picked my Cooper AT3's up for $250 a tyre.
I will be replacing the AT3's with a set of 6 Federal Couragia MT's in Feb next year.

I've run Toyo Open Country AT for the last 3 years (close to 95000kms from this set) and I'd say my driving is about 90% on road, the rest dirt, gravel, with the occassional rocky trail. They cost me about $260ea.
