  • How many K's from a set of BFG A/Ts ?

Just wondering what others are getting from a set of BFG A/Ts?
I reckon I'll only get about 60k before I replace mine in the next month or so - though the Flinders Ranges and Arkaroola probably cost me 5-10k off the life.
Getting a bit noisy on the bitumen now as they wear down but not one puncture which is bloody good for out here.
The original Dunlop AT20's gave me 50k but a few punctures, terrible offroad but comfy on the blacktop.

I had a set on my previous vehicle, a 95 Disco diesel, and got 92,000kms out of them. About 80% of that was on the black top.

A colleague got 120,000km out of his but he rarely goes offroad. Has a big boat though.

Tyre life is really a variable of how you drive, the road types you drive on and what tyre pressures you run.

Damn - 120k is a lot of k's! Certainly eases the pain of the initial outlay.

My BFG's were on the vehicle when I bought it second hand, not sure how many k's had been done when I got them but I have put another 50k on them. Probably got another 10 to 20k in them.

I'm just over 30k on mine and used 1-2 mill rotate and balance every 5,000k so expecting great life out of these, plus run 40 psi and that pressure is checked every week. Figure it's better to look after them and be a bit anal with rotating etc but has paid off, my Grandtecks had 65,000 on them when I transferred over to the bfg's and they still had 5-6mm of tread again well looked after, gave them to my mate for his prado

I'm not planning to change mine until at least 100 000km or until they get down to 2mm. I'm not planning any major off road trips for the next 12 months, town and highway only so I recon they'll go the distance.

They way my grandtrecks were wearing before I changed them, I could have pushed them to 70 000km before having to think about replacing.

I've done about 60,000kms on mine and a lot of that was up and down the Gibb River road. I reckon I've got enough 20,000 left before I have to replace them. I haven't even had a puncture so the spare hasn't even been on the car yet, though I do rotate the other 4 regularly.

I try and push 100-120k out of my BFG's. But I rotate through 6.

...i'm in the 70k range now... and 2 need to be replaced.... probably would have got another 10k from them if i rotated them a bit more often tho.

Does anyone know if there is any truth in the statement that steelbelt tyres shouldn't be rotated to the opposite side of the car?
The theory being that the steel belts take a "set" from being rotated in one direction and that swapping to the other side then alters the "set" and somehow weakens the integrity.

Never heard that directly. Beaurepairs did say to only rotate from front to back and not swap sides. Didn't say why. BFG's are not directional as far as I know.

I think running predominantly on tarmac, one can safely expect a minimum of 100,000 km from a new set of BFG A/T

I can't quite remember what the Toyota dealer measured my tread depths at, when she was last in for a service.
Some thing stick in my mind that they were down to 11mm from 13mm when new.
So I have used roughly 2mm.
I think I have done about 40,000 miles, (60,000km) but I would say 99% of that has been on tarmac.
I generally run between 38 psi and 40 psi.
I think teh thing to look out for with BFG A/T, isn't so much the tread wear, but the cracking of the tyre, the instant it leaves the rim.
This is where the radial crack appear.

I think the way mine are wearing, it will be well over 150,000km, before the tread is down to the 2mm, although I think they will be radially cracked before that.

                              Gra.
