The theory being that the steel belts take a "set" from being rotated in one direction and that swapping to the other side then alters the "set" and somehow weakens the integrity.
Not heard this either - I rotate mine as suggested when including the spare.

I have done 87,000 kms on mine. Only one tyre is close to replacement due to lack of rotation. I imagine 100,000 kms would be easily achieved with a little effort in remembering to rotate at every service.

        Cheers

Remember time is a factor in tyre performance as well not just dread depth. Was talking to my tyre dealer late last year and he mentioned ALL tyres, no matter how expensive start to harden after 4 or 5 years.

That is correct, older steel belted tyres, once on a car and turning in one direction, should only be rotated with the other tyre from that side, as the steel does develop a "bend" in that direction.
If you then put on the other side of the car, the steel will then start to "bend" in the other direction, and can cause the tyre to wear quickly, and it looses some strength.

This really only affects older tyres tho, as newer tyres a built differently. It shouldn't be an issue anymore

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

I even had my BFGs reversed on the rims to even up the wear a bit as they were more worn on the inside due to Ian Diffen stuffing up the alignment. Backwards, forwards, left, right, high pressure, low pressure, I don't think it affects the tyres much at all. Just routinely rotate to get as much of an even wear as possible from your 5 tyres.

They are a very hard wearing tyre all right.
I have had many sets over the years and have never been dissapointed with wear. Current set has done 66,000kms and I have an average of 8mm tread left. That is rotating 5 tyres. I have also had very good milage out of Cooper ST's.
Both very good tyres IMO, but I will be replacing these with BFG's again next time.

Done 35k on mine, still got 8-9mm left, very happy so far. I run 30 psi around town but if I'm getting on the freeway I run 40-44 depending on how much weight I'm carrying. I'm hoping for 80k out of them.
                  Cheers

Got 85k from my BFG's (285/75r16) on my work truck. Most were hard kms with full load on gravel. Did get "hard" in the last 10k and started to chip.

It's hard to say, but I think i've put about 35-40k on mine, and they have loads of tread left. I don't like how the should is more rounded on the outside of the wheel, so now that most of the white lettering has worn off, i'm going to get them flipped on the rims so I start wearing the other shoulder a bit more.

On the topic of pressure - fourbyhil, 30psi around town? I've never run mine that low. I think i'm around the 40 - 42psi mark, which is what they were put to when they were put on. But, based on some of the wear, I do think this is slightly over inflated for bitumen.

What pressures are others running with the BFG AT around town? I'm going to drop down to 36-38 I think, and track the wear for a while....

Well, Ive just replaced my set with 4 new tyres - seems that there is a special on at the moment - $340 ea fitted and balanced, that's pretty good for out here.
My best old tyre had 4mm tread left but is a bit chipped (60k). I thought my wheel alignment was out as both the shoulders on 2 tyres were far more worn than the centre - turns out I was running them under-inflated (34-38 psi av.) Amazingly, I have just had a 2" lift done (Bilstiens/Dobinsons) and the wheel alignment was spot on with the new tyres!!

I just fitted a set of BFG A/T $330 each hoping to get so good kms on them. Finally got rid of the Grandtreks and was suprised at how quite the BFGs are on the road. i'd recommend them to anyone like myself who was undecided about what to change to.
