  • Gotta love Cooper's!

This is what recently happened to my mates 80 series with Cooper S/T tyres:

He was doing about 95 on the West coast highway at the time. Notice how his flare has been ripped off when it happened and also see how much tread was left.

Cooper Tyres refused to do anything about it and only commented that it was OK because the tyre itself stayed inflated. The official reason for refusing to do anything was that he didn't have his original receipt despite the fact it was clear they weren't that old as there was so much tread left. They did offer to part pay for the repair of the flare but as he did that himself he got nothing.

Not surprisingly, he has now removed all the tyres and gone for another brand.

He had his wife and two kids in the car at the time - not only did he have the actual destruction of the tyre but after he stopped he had to worry about the remaining tyre blowing out before he let the pressure out.

Yeah thats one lucky fella........Fairly poor response from the tyre dealer aswell......I think with his case i'd be pushing for some answers really. They hype up their product with guarantees etc but so many people have had bad runs with their product.

If they were marketed as el'cheapo's you would understand......but they are marketed as a premium product which annoys me after owning them and seeing first hand what happened to mine.

I wouldn't even relegate a Cooper to use on a scungy garden trailer, just not worth the risk. All the way with BFG. Our fleet troopies out in the lands are running Mickey Thompsons (made in the same factory as Coopers) and they're happy to get around 6 - 8,000km out of them.

I've got 40,000kms on my Mickey Thompson MTZ's and there's still 50% tread left.

Did the tyre suffer any damage before this? Strange to completely delaminate but remain otherwise in tact. What was the tyre pressure at the time? Did the vehicle had a TPMS fitted at the time? Just wondering if annoying was noticed on this if it did.

an expensive tyre to just peel away!

No previous tyre damage, don't know about tyre pressure but it was his standard road pressure. TPMS is unlikely to have shown anything as it held pressure even after delaminating.

Then that's bad. And Coopers lack of interest is worse. Be interesting to know the batch code for the tyres (see tyre sidewall)?

Has anyone heard any reports of this happening to the newer Cooper models? I've got AT/3s, and after 20,000kms am still very happy with them.

I know someone with ST/Maxx who is also very happy after giving them a good thrashing in the bush.

The ST model has been around for a long time, and I've heard plenty of bad stories for them... just wonder if Coopers has actually taken notice and improved their recent products.

I wonder if there is any way of accertaining if they were some of the 'grey import' Coopers...... You get what you pay for.
These are known for this type of behavior.

That's why I asked to see the batch number. Be interesting to see when they were made.

I've seen this plenty of times with tyre re-treads.
