  • How to fix a tire drone

My BFGs have done about 40,000kms and for the past 5,000kms I have developed a drone in the tires (BFG A/T 265/65/17). I've had them balanced, aligned and keep the pressures at or above F34/R36, but the noise hasn't gotten much better in the past 1,000kms or so.

We're doing longer drives with our new camper and the noise is driving us nuts. I reckon that the tires have at least 20,000kms or more left on them. Short of replacing them (which is an option right now!), is there anything I can do to reduce the drone?

Try 40psi front and rear. The load carrying capacity of these tyres drops dramatically with pressure. I wast told not to use any less than 39psi when I bought mine. That was with 2 occupants and a full tank of fuel and to add 2psi for every 100kg's of weight.

I use to put 40 all round in mine (last 3 4wd's) but I think if they are droning their stuffed and you wont be able to do anything about it except turn the radio up as suggested or replace them.........Cheers Steve

The drone is caused by slight scalloping of the tyre tread, part and parcel of that particular tyre and alot of others , there is nothing you can do about it now it has started , the only way to keep on top of it is do regular cross rotations every 5000 km , sound like a pain but it helps

If you think your AT's have a drone don't ever bother with a set of mud tyres... :???:

My BFGs have also got a bit noisier with wear but most of it comes from the tread pattern, especially on the really coarse bitumen on country roads.

When fully loaded and towing my camper I run my rears at around 50psi, otherwise they get too hot.

I noticed on my bighorns lately had been getting noisey.
did a 5 tyre rotation over the weekend and it's made a bit of a difference.
                when were they last rotated?
