    Hi Andrew,
Slightly OT, but I'm also looking to get a second set of wheels and off-road tyres for the Prado (when it comes !). Can I ask please what brand wheels you got, and from where ?
    Cheers, Bes.

      Bes,

My play wheels are CSA 17" x 8" (steel). I paid $110 each for them through a Goodyear tyre place. But BillyS got some directly from CSA for around the $90 each mark.

        Hi all
I run ATR,S on mine done about 40'000 klm but its my 2nd set
first ones replaced under warranty after 14000klm trying to avoid buying them
again but have not had any punctures but plenty of chipping on
original ones . I run 40psi around town as instructed by the tyre shop
and about 28psi on dirt tracks

        cheers

For all i have done , they are awesome tyres !

BUT i do 95% on the black with a 70k round trip to work , but i reckon i will go ST's next time round . the ATR's are perfect for the occasional trip off road , and the black top driving .

With my slowed down attitude these days i think ST's will go well .

            Hi Bes
I looked at the pros and cons of steel vs alloy and decided in the end to go for a set of alloys. The greater strength and lower unsprung weight giving the winning edge IMHO. Speedy alloys look identical to the standard Prado wheels and they were on sale at Bob Janes at $300 each. A lot of money (plus tyres), but they will last a long time at least.

I pulled my Coopers off after 20,000km, 3 wrecked by similar damage. Unfortunately my missus runs over a short section of dirt each day after driving most of the way to work on the blacktop, so I could not run lower pressures, I found they were OK off road when let down to 26 psi or so, running on the dirt with 36psi was trouble every time.
I ended up whacking on Wrangler MTR's, bit noisy but seem OK so Far.

                rally1,

I'm interested in your 40Ppsi around town on your Cooper ATR's. That is pretty high. Won't you be wearing down the middle of the tread at that pressure ? I must admit I did originally try them at 40 around town but IMHO the thing felt like it was going to shake to death, ( in comparison to how quiet and smooth the prado normally is.) Also when trying a bit of "spirited" driving back from Oberon along the twisties, the whole rig wanted to scatter across each corner - Not much fun. 35psi was much better... I think I may run on the blacktop at around this.

From now on I am going your way of thinking for the dirt. 26psi I think..! Although I am concerned about the side walls. They do bulge a bit at that pressure. No doubt that could cause me grief on the next outing !

Anyway I have a better feeling with my replacement tyre. Its sitting on the back now looking very new... Hopefully it brings better Karma then the last one.

( Big thanks to Chippy and the chopping board post - Whilst I had the tyre off I installed some "chopping board" behind the tyre mount to give a bit more clearance - as the ATR was pushing the plastic tyre guard / protector onto the paint a little bit. )

                  Hi Leachy,
Apologies for the late reply, and thanks for the info. If you have a chance would appreciate a photo of the rims (or perhaps PM me if this is too OT).

                  Thanks Andrew,
I would love to go alloy, and have though of the unsprung weight issue. However, I'm thinking of getting 8 wheels (yes I know !). 4 + spare for the Prado, and 2 + spare for the camper trailer. Then I have 2 matching spares across the 3 axles. So will probably end up with steel due to the cost.

                  Cheers, Bes.

                        Hi Leachy, BillyS,
Thanks for the pictures. At least I know what I'm looking at now ! Will shop around in Melbourne and see what I can get. FYI, I also saw a silver Prado go past me last night - looked like he had a black version of these wheels on - looked pretty good to !
                        Cheers, Bes.

                          Bes,

if your in Melbourne it may be worth giving ATS Geelong a call. They can supply after market wheels (not CSA, but I can't think of the actual brand at the moment). When I was lookng they actually had some second hand sets available, but it wasn't worth shipping them to Perth.

hey Bes , depending on the brand , they come in CHROME , BLACK or WHITE .

King Wheels is another brand that come in all finishes/colours

                            Click - http://www.kingwheels.com.au/kingwheels ... page=steel

If i had bought any other colour of prado rather than white , i would have put black steelies on too .

billyS you are lucky you live in SA mate or you just might come out one morning to find your prado up on blocks minus those gorgeous sunraisa look-alikes and your flares as well!!!

I remember seeing your flares in another thread and thinking they were so 'naff and now the rims man-oh-man

I always thought the neatest and toughest looking fourby I've seen when I was a young fella and my old man bought a dx 80 series and kitted her out with the flares and rims - I swear the 120 gx kitted out like that is the closest I've set short of a 105 series since then! I'm thinking of sending the standard rubber bands to that great tyre fire in the sky, and I think the kitty just might stretch to a set of csa and coopers.

Plan to justify it to the missus by throwing the two best standard rims and tyres onto the camper (currently running 15 inch sunnys but will need to check offset) and then we have three spares all the same over three axles ... that should fly .... shouldn't it?
2004 GX 120 3 ltr - beaudesert 2.75" exhaust, 60 ltr engel +rear power, speedy grande alloys & pirelli scorpion ATRs, Polaris PID3119 Head Unit & Uniden UH015sx UHF, millford cargo barriers and full sandgrabba mats.

Stevo , it all depends the way you justify it to her .

Im takin the missus and my 2 young boys out for a trek at saunders gorge on friday , its an easy trek over the hills but i'll be saying all the way round

"darling , this is a easy track .... just imagine when we go to arkaroola , ayres rock and all that"

                                "we'll need .....blah blah blah"

im going for a 2 inch lift , uhf and a winch OK'D by friday night .

I'll buy them anyway buy i get great pleasure in her telling me to buy new bits

Buying them and telling her why i need them , just to have her roll her eyes and nod "yes honey , ok" is nowhere near as nice as her telling me TO BUY THEM and how much better it will be when we go here and there due to these extra bits :P
