Thanks Mick, this is more or less where I am at at the moment.

After a ring around, Procomps are now at a more realistic price of $440 each, so the difference is back to $150 odd for the set.

No one seems to want to budge on mickey thompson prices

Of course, after talking to one local dealer, I was informed that nearly all Mickey Thompson tyres are illegal on the road  This was from a guy who told me he used to work at ARB, so he knew what he was talking about with 4wd tyres, so I asked his recommendation, to be told no one really makes mt's in 17's and at's would be the best bet

Who does he class as no one? seems most of the main 4x4 tyre players do.. Goodyear, BFG, Cooper, Pro Comp, Mickey T, Kuhmo, Maxxis etc.... just to name a few I know of...

You also have the option of running a 16 inch steel rim to increase your choice (assuming you are willing to grind the front brake calipers a little)

or even run a second set of rims all together if you just want weekend play tyres...

It never ceases to amaze me the rubbish that sales guys can spew out. At least now you know where not to buy tyres.

He mumbled a bit about load and construction not being australian compliant, then just repeated himself. But after he told me that, I was more curious than anything to see what his recommendation would be.

Just the amount of misinformation out there is astonishing, these guys are giving out this advice and having it believed by, i reckon, 9 out of 10 drivers.

Oh well, waiting to hear back from 1 more dealer, then it will be time to make a decision, hopefully it will be the right one

Now thats just out right BS. All new tyres imported/sold in Australia have to meet the relevant Australian Design Rules.

No retail chain would touch them if they were illegal.

I am in complete agreeance with that TP. The guy must be a complete and utter morron! Maybe he just received his pink slip and thought he would get back at his boss by losing him a sale.

OK, finally made a decision, getting the mtz.

$400 each through Trend Tyrepower at Taren Point, having them fitted next week.

At the end of the day, i couldn't justify the extra dollars for what are essentially very similar tyres. If anyone is interested, the best price of $440 for the Procomp xmt was through Jax at Sutherland

I'd rather not name the other place, but if you want to know who to miss in your tyre dealings, just pm me

So has anyone got a set of these pro comp XMT's yet. I've put 80,000 on my BFG A/T's and have been steered towards the XMT's by the local 4wd shop. He reckons there pretty quiet for a mud as well? At $420-$450 a tyre it's a big decision.

anyone have any updates on the MTZ's lately?

Was in ARB yesterday and got a quote (no bargaining just straight question) and were less that the STT's don't recall but something like $30 per tire or so. The MTZ's were quoted @ $400 each at ARB Artarmon.

Anyone have places they recommend for competing prices?

my last set of tyres on the lux were procomp xmt's and i got 100thou out of them and to this day they have been the best tyres by far that i have ever used. I replaced them with the micky t mtz only cause i,ve heared good things about them and have never owned a set before. Well i did 10thou on them and i have since sold them didnt like them at all ! compared to the procomp the hwy noise was so much louder and off road they didnt perform as well either. I have since gone to bfg t/a's and although there more of a a/t i think once i wear these out the procomps will be back.

I will be coming up for new tyres in about 15 - 20,000 km, not sure if I will go with the MTZ's again as they have been a bugger of a tyre to get balanced properly. Not sure why the tyre places have had such a hard time balancing them but they do. The best balance I had was done down in Adelaide when they had only about 5000 on them, they now have around 65,000 on them. Not the quietest tyre on the road and damn lethal in the wet on tar. Many times the VSC has kicked in on wet tar due to the tyres losing grip, can be a tad scary when it happens especially in tight corners like around Horrock's Pass near Port Augusta.

I am considering opting for the 4 Rib ATZ this time but still have not made up my mind. Definitely will not be Cooper ST's though after my mates experience with his delaminating on him all within 40km of each other.
