  • OEM Alloy Rims - different wheel nuts!!????

So I go and buy 3 secondhand Prado alloy rims off Gumtree for my camper trailer, only to find that the rims I bought have different wheel nut holes!!

    The difference is:
    • My '09 Prado's wheel holes are larger than the stud. The nuts have a mating 'thick washer' (for want of a better phrase) that fits into the void between the stud and the rim hole.
    • The wheels I purchased secondhand have holes that fit the stud exactly. The rim holes are tapered - to fit tapered wheel nuts.

What wheels did I just purchase? Did toyota change the design? If so in what year?

I would say you have almost certainly bought Speedy Wheels, not genuine Toyota wheels. Aside from using tapered nuts they are otherwise exactly the same and about a quarter the price when bought new. They would be "Speedy Grande's"

I have the Speedy wheels on my camper trailer, they have done a lot of outback miles without issue.

    Cheers Andrew

      Thanks for that AJ.

If you want to use the spare from the back of your Prado on the camper, how do you do it? Do you have extra wheel nuts for this scenario?

I am pretty sure you can get genuine nuts that are both flanged and tapered - or just carry a second set of nuts

AJ is on the money, carry an extra set of both types of nuts, and some spare studs whilst you're at it. Be sitting down when you pay for the OE Toyota nuts...

I was sitting down and it still hurt

            I found these:

            http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOYOTA-GE...0AAOSwcwhVQ2KT

            Not genuine obviously... any thoughts?

Also... I will need to change the studs on my camper as they are the wrong thread. Does anyone know what the thread is on the Prado?

You need to be aware that most trailer stubs have imperial threads, so original toyota nuts wont fit your trailer anyway.

The spare on my camper is mounted with metric studs and tapered nuts so I can easily use the trailer spare on the car. I don't carry nuts for putting the car spare onto the trailer. I would need to destroy 2 tyres to the point of non repair on the trailer before this would be an issue, and then I carry the gear to swap tyres off and onto rims. So in my case I would need to destroy 2 rims before I am in trouble. Even then I can still drive the car, its just the trailer that is stopped. I've done enough outback miles to believe that scenario is so unlikely that its not even worth contemplating.

On a previous trailer I replaced the studs with metric ones, that makes life really easy, just haven't bothered this time.

              Cheers Andrew

Thanks AJ. So I'll swap out the studs on the camper. Do I need to specify what type of thread for the metric studs? Or are all metric studs the same.

ALKO have the M12 studs that you need. I replaced the studs on my box trailer when I gave it a birthday (21st from memory). The camper I just picked up was ordered with M12 studs so I was able to use my spare 150 wheels on that and put the '120' steelies on the box trailer. I also picked up genuine Toyota wheel nuts from my local Bob Jane for $1 each. You can be lucky.

                      Thread needs to be M12 X 1.5

Be aware as well some aftermarket flanged nuts are shallower than OEM ones and the nuts will bottom out on the studs resulting in a wheel that will part company with the hub. I got caught with my camper which was spec'd from new with toyota 6 stud hubs and metric studs but the previous owner had a hub bearing failure and whoever he took it to for repairs replaced the hub and backplate etc but left the 7/16 UNF studs in the new hub. Lucky I realised at home when I replaced the steelies on the trailer with OEM Prado alloys..
