Is it OK to mix the same size tyres with the same load and speed ratings but with different tread patterns on the rear axle

I know it is preferred that if you have to mix tyres that they be the same from side to side but can be different front to back. Not sure about your laws in WA, but in Qld it's illegal to have different tread patterns on the same axle. On the rear I wouldn't see a prob with handling.
