    Re: mickey thompson atz

A quick question regarding the spare wheel hard cover assy. I know the hard cover will not fit over the ATZ but can the backing part of the assy be able to stay on and have the ATZ fit inside it?

Also for the extra bit of money would you go with the MTZ over the ATZ? I have to order my tyres today cause my grandcraps are just about worn out. Still I did get 62000 kms out of them and I could probably push another 3 to 5 thousand but they would be absolutely useless in wet weather on tar and dangerous off road.

      Mav,
I went for the MTZ simply because they have the "powerply" and the ATZ doesn't in the 265/70 size.
Probably they are overkill for the car, but it's just a little bit of extra insurance. That's my story anyway, and I'm sticking to it
      Good luck

        Re: mickey thompson atz

Well I just got back from doing the rounds of the tyre places and the upshot is that the MT ATZ is definitely not legal on the Prado here as the outside diameter is 26mm more than the OEM tyre. To be legal it has to be +/- 15mm. So that stuffs that up for me as I have to remain road legal for the insurance.

I did see some Toyo AT's in 265/65/17 that looked like a pretty aggressive tread pattern but I have not reseached their construction yet.

 They would be funny on a Prado. Not much meat in a 165. I guess you where looking in a bike shop

The increase over 15mm is a problem for most staes I believe. I understand the insurance issueand I guess I was luck enough that when I contacted them and told them about the change from a 65 to 70 that they where happy to insure, but only time will tell.

ops: Ooops! yeah I meant 265.

Anyway I was not satisfied with the word from the tyre shops so I did some more research and finally found this document Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14 which states on page 16 that the change allowed in overall diametre of tyres on offroad vehicles is now +50mm to -26mm. So I printed this document out and went to the Motor Transport Authority and asked the Inspectors if this document was in effect here in the NT, they responded that it was the document that they based their decisions on. So I asked them specifically about going from 265/65/R17 to 265/70/R17 and they sat down and did their calculations and came back with "No problems with that". Their calculator said it was an increase of only 3% which they said was allowable but when it came to getting it inspected for rego I would have to take it to them and nowhere else as they would put a notation on the rego to make it totally legal for insurance purposes.

So I drove from there to Bridgestone Tyre Centre and asked the guy in there what the cost difference was between the ATZ 4 Rib and the MTZ? He says, "$10.00 per tyre." I said, "Great order me 5 MTZ's please."

Now I just have to wait till they arrive from Adelaide, total cost per tyre fitted and balanced was $398.00

            Cheers

                Re: mickey thompson atz

So do any of those running the Mickey T ATZs (4 rib) have some feedback on their tyres?
                How are they wearing?
                How is the road noise?
How is the grip - wet/dry on road, gravel, mud, sand....the moon....
                Anything else...

Am really interested in these tyres but have been able to find very little local, real-life opinions on them.
Would be great to hear from fellow Pradopointers - after all, these are really the only opinions that matter

Its interesting to see a few people who were thinking of getting the ATZs have ended up going with the MTZs. Unfortunately the majority of my miles are on the blacktop (which will hopefully change for the better once I have decent rubber and a lift!) so I cannot really justify going to a muddie so the ATZ looks a (hopefully) happy compromise.
Had BFG ATs on previous vehicle and put them through plenty of tough conditions - Tanami, Gibb River, Fraser Island, Vic High Country - and they always performed well with no punctures in about 60,000kms. But would like to go something different this time.
                Any feedback would be great!

I was one of those that were going for the ATZ and switched to the MTZ. A couple of reasons were that the price difference was $10 per tyre so an extra $50 bucks to get the MTZ's over the ATZ's. Also the fact that the MTZ's do have the Powerply layer whereas the ATZ 4 ribs don't in the 265/70/R17.

That was enough to tip me over to the MTZ's.

                    Re: mickey thompson atz

                    Thanks Mav
You're right. $50 in the scheme of things is not much of an issue!
Guess I am concerned about the grip in the wet on the bitumen with the MTZ. And I guess The Mrs wont want it being tooooo noisy......
With the family on board and plenty of daily driving/freeway/highway I cant ignore that more rubber on the road (as with an all-terrain as opposed to mud-terrain) will mean more stopping power when it rains (which isnt often these days, but still).
On the other hand, more chunkyness may be a saviour when off the beaten track....
(and of course they look so tough)
                    Tricky tricky
So is this power ply aimed at better handling or more puncture resistance? (the Mickey T website keeps referring to it providing 'better handling tyres' when cornering)

                      Re: mickey thompson atz

Mine have only done 3500km and have not been wet yet!

Anyway, bear in mind that this is my first 4WD, and I never experienced the standard tires:

Noise: Basically a non-issue. You CAN hear them if you concentrate in the 40-80kmh range, but they don't sound like bar treads or anything like that. Wife has not noticed or commented, so I don't think this is a problem.

Handling in the wet: Can't say. Still waiting for rain

Handling in the dry: I haven't tried to 'punt' the Prado around roundabouts or anything like that, but the handling is pretty good, better than I thought it'd be. I'm up for suspension upgrade soon, so it will be interesting to see if that changes things as I get the feeling that the current limitations are more to do with the suspension than with the tyres.

Ride: The car seems to just soak up the bumps. I'm not sure how much of that is the tyres and how much is the rubber mounted body. Anyway, no complaints at all. We did a trip up to Lake mungo with 5 on board and a stack of luggage. Everyone was very impressed with the way the car handled and rode.

                      Hope that helps!

I've had my MT ATZ/4s for about a month. I changed from Cooper ATRs.

Noise: I can hear a slight hum from about 40kph. My wife hasn't noticed. Therefore no extrra noise.

Ride: A bit firmer, as I'm running 40psi all round. Again, wife hasn't noticed:-)

Handling - dry: I've been a bit cautious, and haven't noticed any difference at all around town.

Handling - wet: What is this "wet" of which you speak?:-)

I'm spending a week in the high country around Easter, and really looking forward to seeing how they handle some of the rockier tracks. We're going to camp at the bottom of the Kings Plain Tk.

Done around 7K on my MT ATZ's, trip to Adelaide and back and then various trips to Sydney and out to Mudgee. Yes they are noisier than the Grandtreks but nothing outlandish, wet road holding on bitumen I have found superb with no breakout experienced yet. Haven't really been in any sticky mud yet though so time will tell in that regard.

I am running 36psi all round, which I find is the optimum pressure for my use

Assuming you have the GXL then the flares would have gone to waste. Not sure if the skinnies would sit right on the standard 7.5" alloys that you have in your picture in the avatar. I may stand corrected.

I've got the 265/70R17 MT ATZ4 (4 Rib) and I wouldn't go anything less, but according to their website there isn't anything smaller if you are referring to the aggressive 4 rib:
                                Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 Rib
I've also had a gander at the older 5 rib and it does have that sizing:
