Correction, have been waiting for the 70's for months. The 70's have been out of stock and are not available untill end of October. I will ask them how long to get the 65's.

            BFG wearability

Can anybody give me a "valid" comparison Between the wear that BFG's give Vs the Toyo AT's.

That's a tricky one mate. Its like asking how far can I get on a tank of fuel. One person might get 100,000kms out of the BFGs and the next guy only 70,000. All depends on type of driving, roads driven on, how heavily laden the car etc etc.

At a guess I'd say the BFGs will well outlast the Toyo's. The main reasons I could think of would be the BFGs are a stronger LT construction and most LTs start off with more tread depth also.

Sorry I'm probably not much help but it IS one of those "can of worms" questions.

True, but on average 40+K's is what is expected out of the stock Grandtrek's.
What would the expectations "on average" be for the Toyo's and the BFG's

Yesterday, I checked with my local guy who is pretty good, and he has tried hard to get these tyres for me, as he cannot sell me my second option (the MT ATZ 4rib) because you have to be a MT dealer to be able to buy them, and he isn't.

The BFG's are on the way, but still, no-one at BFG is willing to put a delivery date on it. That means nothing has changed and they are still on the water. He reckons we'll be lucky to get them much before christmas. Who knows what the exchange rate will do to the price, but I guess all the US tyres are going to suffer the same in that area.

Even 2 weeks would be marginal for my purposes, that's about spot on the Parado delivery date...

So I have locked down a deal on tha ATZ's

I can speak for the BFG AT KO,s I got 60,000km,s on my last set on my old Pootrol and sold it with them on, the buyer was wrapt in the still decent remaining tread depth, previous BFG AT KO's I have got 75,000km,s but you must rotate and keep a check on front end alignment as they scuff easily if alignment is out.

As mkh said the wear anyone gets out of any set of tyres is very subjective. Having said that I got 65,000km out of my first set of BFGs on an NL TD Pajero and only killed the tyres because I went too low in pressure to get out of D'entrecasteau and the tyres blistered between the tread blocks. The WA boys will tell you it can get a little soft in there at the end of the Christmas holidays and the sand is HOT. I then put another set on and these had about 80,000km on them when I repaced the Pajero with a 90 series TD. Fitted BFGs from new and again managed 80,000+km before putting the next set on. These had something like 70,000km on them at sale time and were still legal with a few km to go.

So I would definately go the BFG ATs; I have no experience with Toyos so cannot offer an opinon there. But, and this is important, our driving is mainly fire trail, bush track and beach work, nothing too nasty or aggressive. I also rotated the tyres at 15,000km front to back. Never had a new spare to throw in the mix just kept the best from the last lot.

The only reason I didn't fit BFGs to the D4D was the Queensland Transport regulations which make the 70 profile tyres illegal in 265 width.

On the subject of the 65 profile BFGs my local JAX is aware of the impending shipment but no idea if next week, next month or next millenia. But then I have some ATR Coopers to kill first and at 20,000km they still look new (ish).

Ok got off the phone with the dealer and he has just informed me that the tyres are in transit and are about 6-8weeks away  . Might have to start looking at alternatives if it gets any later and quoted price was 315 each so the aussie is starting to bite on prices.

                              Re: 265 65 17 BFG ALL TERRAINS

I have had the 265/70/17 BFG's on for the last 61,000km, they still have around 10-15k to run i reckon. (I got 33,000 out of the Grandcraps)

I rang my insurance company and got them to note that i had these on my policy and they had no objection.

These tyres have done the Strzlecki, and around innamincka about 18 months ago towing a CT and again this year, went the outback route to William Creek (Borefield and Oodnadatta tracks) then onto Uluru, Kings Canyon, Meerenie loop, palm valley, Serpentine Gorge, Alice springs, Gemtree and back to Adelaide again, towing a Cavalier CT. Plus of course Beachport/robe and various other Murray river and Yorke peninsula destinations and lots of city driving.....

btw saw at first hand the problem of high tyre pressure on the Borefield... I was following my mates prado when the carcass of their rear Passenger side tyre (Not a BFG..) went by us on the left hand side still rolling beautifully...while the car was down to the rim on what was left of the tyre... turns out the car was serviced before our trip and the tyres inflated to 46psi and they didn't let them down before venturing on the borefield... Tyre just exploded at 80km/h while towing the CT....quite scary really...

Have never had a Puncture, not even close.. but have a couple of blocks chipped (minor). Run at 40 psi around town, and various pressures on the tracks we have done. Generally around 30 psi on outback tracks and 18 psi on sand.

Rotated BFG's every 10,000km (5 tyre). I must admit I would buy another set of these at an instants notice... I am even thinking of keeping the best one left when they finally give up as a second spare and fitting it onto a 6th (steel) rim.

yes the speedo is (slightly) out, but in a 1KZ I have never had a speeding fine anyway  .... However the extra ground clearance under the front is handy when your steel ARB bar and dual battery bring the front down...

Anyway just my experience... but it has been positive... There are lots of other positive experiences aorund with the tyres people have, and my mate has just fitted the 265/65/17 Kumho's.. Which i had never heard of...

Anyone wants any other info from me, reply here or PM me... happy to chat.

Happy pradopointing everyone.. what a great site...

                              PK.

Spoke with dealer today, apparently the BFG 265/65/17 All Terrains have been delayed until the 18th December 2008...
