Ahh...yeah that's what I meant  mm not % That'd be pretty impressive if it was 50%!!
Ok, so I'll look at the placard and go 50mm up from there (with confirmation from vicroads etc) but I don't have a clue what rims I have other than 17" and steel.
Am I right that the GX came out with 2 different widths? I have an 06 model. Is there anywhere on the rim which tells you the width or is it a matter of measuring it when you don't have a tyre on?

    Here it is.

The rim size should be stamped on the inside of the rim. From the pic it looks like your rims are the 17" x 6" variety.
All 120 Prados have the same basic body width it is just that the early GXs and non the Standard are not fitted with flares reducing the tyre width that can be legally fitted.

          Flyingbushpig,
In 2006 the GX came out with your 17 x 6" rims with 225/70 17's as standard as the GX has narrower guards/flares. The GX Limited came out with a 17 x 7.5" rim steel wheels AND the same guards/flares as the GXL, GRANDE etc with 265/65 r 17, which won't fit within the narrower guards on your GX (legally anyway.) Due to the size & shape of the guards it is not feasible to change yours to the wider ones to fit wider tyres - unless you check out some of the aftermarket flexible flares available, but asthetically they may not look as good for the sake of wider tyres. The upside of having the 17 x 6" wheels, if you want more there are always quite a few up for sale on ebay for around $100-150 for a set of 4! The previous owner of your GX probably went to 235/70 as this size is a bit wider than stock and still doesn't protrude past the guards.
Wherever you go..there you are, it's just more comfortable getting there in the Prado....

Thanks Gavdan1968, that clears things up nicely. I'm not too worried about the width in terms of 4WDing. I know it makes some difference but not nearly as much as tyre height and pressures. (height for clearance).
It also explains why I may have seen a GX with what looked extremely like original flares the other day - I'm guessing it was a "limited". "The previous owner of your GX probably went to 235/70 as this size is a bit wider"... It's actually 235/65 which is what my problem is. The previous owner was Glaxo-smith-cline, medical company who did 150,000 clicks in two years    It was all sealed roads and long k's just hauling stuff i pressume. I think the reason for smaller tyres is more to do with wear and tear on the engine/performance than anything. That sorts me out with tyres anyway - and a few more rims wouldn't go astray especially at that price.

Since 2007 (I think) the GX has had the same body (flares) and the same size wheels/tyres as the GXL and above models (Steel wheels though). They now have the "Standard" model at the bottom of the range which looks like your older GX. So it may have been a newer GX that you saw.

Just picked up my brand spanking new 2009 T/dsl GXL. Asked Mr Toyota to replace the Grandtreks with BFG ATRs and guess what?

                They have fitted 265/70/R17s.

Now the tyre placard shows that 265/65/R17 are the manufacturers specification.

Just to be safe, I compared the speedo readout with my GPS and they are both equal up to 130kph at which point the speedo starts to read about 2kph slow. Now I would have expected that the increased circumference would have resulted in my speedo reading about 5kph slow as is the case with the 265/70R16s fitted on my 95 series.

So, if fitted by Toyota then technically that makes them legal and even more so given that the speedo reads correct!

Not quite, they are only legal if they fall within an increase allowed by your states road authority or covered by and engineers certificate.

And technically your 70 series tyres were fitted by your dealer who is a Toyota franchised reseller, not by Toyota. The only tyre sizes approved by Toyota are those listed on the tyre placard.

I have the same size rims on my 03 GX as you do on yours. I ended up going to Coopers 235/70/r17 ATRs. As far as I can tell, they are the largest you can put on those rims, pity because the body will allow 245s.

As MickL points out, it doesn't make them legal, but it just might give you some legal recourse if ever they become an issue.

                        Got me.

According to DOTARS website (Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14, NCOP, Section LS) passenger cars are allowed to have an increase in tyre diameter of 15mm, off-road passenger & light commercial can have 50mm increase in tyre diameter provided speedo remains within ADR accuracy range.

But, the document uses the term "should" which a good lawyer would understand does not mean "Must."

Room for interpretation and they leave it to each state to determine the road worthiness of each case.

                          Nice can of worms :?

Today I fittted a second set of 265/70/17 BFG ATs to the Prado. The old set (15,000klms old) went on the Toyota steel rims I bought the other month for the camper trailer. Speedo as measured by GPS is 100% accurate at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 & 100

How accurate.... Toyotas speedos are set at 2kms faster than actual speed. I doubt whether a 70's series tyre would be same speed as the original 65's radar gun wise...

The early build Prados with 265/70/17 would exceed speed by approx 4% at 100kmph. The later builds from 2007 On is accurate at 100kmph.
Therefore one would think that later builds with 265/65/17s actual speed is slower than what the speedo is displaying.

I believe this point has been covered off on PP previously. FYI - I drive a late 2004 with BFG 265/70/17s and the speedo is out by approx 4% @ 100kmph.
                                Cheers,
