  • Rear tyre squeal

:?: I have just purchased a Dealer used vehicle 2007 with upgrades from 4WD City in Sydney and on driving down to home on the South Coast, noticed that on tight corners the back right tyre squeals has anyone experienced this or do I have a real problem

Maybe check your tyre pressures, must tyres will squeal if low in pressure, and if 1 tyre is lower than the rest you tend to drive to suit the other 3, so that 1 stands out.

:? Thanks for the prompt reply guys, the tyre pressures at first were at 40 PSI and the back right was at about 20, when I first checked but I adjusted them all firstly to the door specs 190 KPA ended up at 200 KPA as 190 seemed a bit low for the Dunlops but still the squel remains, especially on a short right hand turn moving away sedately. Has anyone found a preferential tyre pressure for normal driving on the highway ?

I run 38 (~260), 200 is ony 29psi so a fair bit low. 40 would have been ball park.

I run my GTs at 40 PSI on the HWY. If you want to isolate the problem to the tyre then swap it for the spare and see if the noise goes away. If it does then there is something amiss with the tyre and just take it to a tyre joint and ask them to give it the once over for peace of mind.

Sounds more like a mechanical issue with the diff rather than a tyre problem.
Diffs when locked will do this on bitumen.

Could also be simply going too fast around corners and blipping the white line with the Grandcraps, they howl like buggery normally....

Have increased the pressures to 40 and the problem is way reduced, still has small squeal on turns, even moving away normally into a turn with no white lines. Take the point it may be crappy tyres will change around and see how it goes, the tyre pressure certainly changed the ride, made it feel more secure.

Just another thought: It could be the tyres are worn unevenly across the tread. Back when I had my Jeep, I had a lift installed which slightly changed the camber of the front wheels. All of a sudden my tyres which looked ok to me, started squeeling through roundabouts.

Could be that one of your tyres is just worn a bit funny or could even have come from a different vehicle before being fitted to yours at the dealer.

Thanks again for the added info guys, I have noticed that the inside edge of both back tyres has a feathering, any suggestions other than the wheel alignment which will be done soonest.

Those back two tyres that are feathered have more than likely spent too much time on the front before being rotated and have also been operated at too low a pressure. I run my GT's at 36psi and they currently have 65K up and still going. Take no notice of the pressure on the door placard, rotate them regularly at every 5-10K and keep the pressures up to about 36-38psi and you will notice a big difference
