  • MTZ review

Just completed first tyre rotation on the MTZ and am still very happy with them.
Fantastic grip off road and good on road manners.

They get a bit of a hum up at around 85-95 kph and when cornering at speed but nothing my wife has complained about.

There is a very slight increase in overall tyre noise at all speeds compared to the standard Grand Treks but keep in mind I drive a diesel 1KZ with exhaust mods so that would be covering a little of the tyre noise.

They don't give away much in terms of on road grip both at speed and in the wet to the roadies.

On fast dirt and low range off road over rutted rocky tracks they are awesome. No mud as yet or sand.

    KM 6000k's

    Tread depth new 15mm

    Tread depth now 12.5-13mm

Road conditions Mostly off road on the following tracks:

    The Kempe Road (towing)
    The Oodnadatta Track (Towing)
    The Birdsville Track (Towing)
    The Birdsville Development rd (Towing)
    Dillons Highway (Towing)
Innaminka to the Dig Tree (Towing)
The Strzlecki including detour to Cameron cnr (Towing)
    Flinder Ranges NP
    Willow Springs- Sky Trek
    PAR 12 to Peake (Towing)
    PAR 3 to Nuccaleena Mine
PAR 4&5 to Patawarta Gap and Artimore ruins

I've been running 38psi on road, 28psi on good fast dirt, 26psi off road/rocky trails.

    Nice work there, Mick

How many KM's do you expect to get out of them?

I would say that mine are only a little bit more worn than micks and i have put nearly 40k on them.

I recommend them to anyone looking for new rubber. Great tyres.

I can't really say at this stage due to the 6000km they have done being very hard k's... lots of gibber roads and off road tracks as you can see by the list of tracks, plus we were fully loaded up and towing for most of it...

I'll know more next rotation as we will have done a bit more "average" driving by our standards.

Going by what Damo has said they will wear quite well over the longer term.

Any more thoughts on the tyre ? Happy ??

More than happy, they actually exceeded my expectations for a muddy.

At this stage I run them full time, I'll measure the wear at the rotation and see how they are going(just gave them an eyeball today and they look pretty good). If the wear rate is really awfull I'll get a second set of rims.

I'd be happy to leave them on full time if I can get 60k or more out of them.

The MTZs are currently number one contender for when i replace tyres soon. a few club members run them and give them a flogging. they handle it very well. I just see if I can find a retailer that will do interest free for 12mths.

Joel, I got mine at a great price from tyrepower at Bero. not sure if they finnance but considering I only brought 2 and the price & service he gave me I have no problem recomending them.

As for ware, mine got cut up a fare bit on the Birdsville inside track, but I had alot of weight and probably to much air(25). Over all I have almost 6000km on 2 and aprox 8000 on 4(brought 2nd hand) and I am VERY impressed with them. Handle fantastic on fast dirt, and behave better than expected for a muddie on the black top. Am also very surprised how easy they handle the sand, I dont let them out any more than my old all teranes on the beach.

Any update on the wear rate? Has it cooled down enough in Adelaide yet?

                    Cheers

Thanks for the reminder, I'll write something up tomorrow  Rotation is done, just have to take and post some pictures and write up my tread depths.

                        KM: 11,000km

                        Tread depth new:15mm

Tread depth now: Three tyres are at 12.2-12.3mm (these 3 have done the full 11,000km) One is at 14.1-14.2mm (it's only done 5000km as I rotate 5 tyres)

Road conditions: 80% metro Adelaide driving, work-home etc.
Two trips away (Riverland and Eyre Peninsula mostly highway, but with a little high speed dirt, total 1400km)
One day trip to Morgan quarry, 5-6 hrs of low range sand/mud/rocky climbs.
                        No towing during this 5000k.

Comments: The last 5000k are are much better reflection of my average driving conditions and this shows in the reduced rate of wear. The first 6000k were very hard on the tyres (see first post). They may possibly have been a little green too (not fully cured)

Call it 1mm of wear every 5000km and I'll see 65000km out of them (though it looks like it will be a little better than this)

Nice to see that you have had no rear wear for the last 6K then. So based on performance to date how many ks are you expecting from these. 60K or more?

I paid $345 each in Adelaide last July.. I am led to believe there have been some substantial price increases since then. From what I hear they are now around the $400 mark.
