You have too much cash. Not as a result of Rudd though I would suspect.

I would like to think I could afford to have 2 sets of tyres, and also the spare time to have fun on weekends...... Might just have to settle with the Grantreks for a few more thousand kms....and start saving now for the tyres

I'm getting ATZs fitted on Monday and have found a place to buy my 29k Grandtreks. Said they will give me between $50 and $100 each but I will believe that we I see it. If I get about $150.00 then I will be happy as a pig.

Ah, bet you all wished you had a wife like that, and with Mother's Day just round the corner, what better present to get her!!!!
Well don't get the MTZ's thinking that they are going to be good wet tar tyres cause I can say from experience that they are not. First time I have ever had the VSC kick in today using the MTZ's on wet tar road going over Horrocks Pass near Wilmington in SA. Pretty scarey feelingwith the abs kicking in and out trying to control the wheel spin on multiple wheels at once and it was slow speed around 40 to 60 km/h on tight corners.

              Re: MTZ review

              KM: 16,000km

              Tread depth new:15mm

Tread depth now: Three tyres are at 12-12.3mm (these 3 have done the full 16,000km)
One is at 12.6mm, one at 13.3 and one at 14.6 (New only been on 2000km or so)

I added another tyre to the rotation about 2000km ago which is going to throw out the stats a bit but I'll carry on with the review over the life of the tyres.

Road conditions: 80% metro Adelaide driving, work-home etc.
One day trip to Flinders Ranges, 5-6 hrs of low range rocky climbs mixed dirt and tracks. 1300km trip, of which 800km was highway
              No towing during this 5000k.

              Comments:

The wear rate gradually seems to be reducing at the tread gets lower. Ignoring the fact I've added a 6th tyre in on the rotation now I believe I would have got 65,000k + out of 5 tyres or spot on for a 4 year use by date for the k's per year I do in the Prado.

Had two emergency stops in the last week due to near misses... both times tyres locked very easily in dry conditions and the ABS had to work hard...would have been interesting in the wet! Despite this I'm still very happy with them and would still class them as a good all rounder for those that travel a lot or do regular 4x4ing and are happy to make a small compromise in regards to on road performance.

MickL , if you could make the decision again would you still have got MTZ's or would you have considered ATZ 4 ribs ?

Im pulling my hair out trying to decide :?

My problem is a 70km round trip commute to work, i really should get the ATZ but the man wants MTZ's 8)

                  Re: MTZ review

I've got a set of MTZs on play wheels but still run the Grandteks day to day. I couldn't see the point in ditching brand new tyres when I find them acceptable on the road. The orignal plan was once the grandtreks are worn out, to replace them with an Pirelli Scorpion ATRs and still keep the MTZs for offroad.
But now I'm thinking once the grandtreks are dead I'll just start running the MTZs full time. The Prado is my wife's daily drive and she is happy with the MTZs.

Cheers Leachy , thats a tick in the right box And thanks for not finishing with "but in your case , ATZ's are probably more appropriate"

I already have a price here in Adelaide for 5 fitted and balanced for $2000.

If noise bothers you and you mainly run on tar then I would go the ATZ 4 rib. The MTZ is quite a noisy tyre and might not be appreciated by your wife, plus the MTZ is not all that good at handling tared roads in the wet so if you live in a high rainfall area give the MTZs a miss.

                        Re: MTZ review

I think you need to be a keen off roader to run the MTZs full time, as the others have mentioned, you do make a number of compromises running a muddy on road.

I'd go the 4 rib ATZ if I was buying right now. For me in reality it's a lot of long range touring and desert tracks/gibber/rocky tracks (SA/Flinders/outback) not so many weekend mud holes. An AT that's a little on the aggressive side would suit the conditions better and be much more livable on road and around town.

Cheers guys , the brain is telling me the same

Looks like its the ATZ then , i tried to see if the FC-II's would fit but even with a lift its very tight and the tyres are 2" bigger than standard .... not that it worried me anyhow as i run zero off-set wheels

I have a pretty big lift , my bilstiens and ridepros jumped my wagon up 3" after the setling period . I tried Dick Cepek FC-II , but the 33/12.50R17LT is 2 inches bigger than the normal prado tyre , im going to go 265/70/17 ATZ i reckon .

Sheesh...another rotation already. Still wearing well considering the terrain travelled

                                KM: 21,000k's

                                Tread depth new: 15mm

Tread depth now: 2 tyres are at 11mm, one at 12.2mm and one at 13.2mm. (plus two spares 12.5 and 12.1)

Road conditions during this rotation period: Mostly off road on the following tracks:

                                Borefield Road (26psi)
                                Oodnadatta track (26psi)
PAR out to The Peake (26psi)
Mt Dare via Hamalton-Eringa-Bloods Creek (26psi)
Mt Dare to Dalhousie (direct route - 24 back 22 front)
Dalhousie to Purni Bore (24 back 22 front)
                                Rig Road-WAA line-Erabeena track-French Line-QAA Line (18psi)
                                Birdville Track (26psi)

Balance of travel was highway (trip to Riverland, one to Whyalla and one to Middleton) 70% and city 30%. (36/38 psi highway and 32/34psi city)
I'm still very happy with the rate of wear.
I'm yet to get them balanced either(since new)... no vibration issues at all.
Performed very well across the Simpson and on big Red.... showed the AT users up too
