  • quiet tyre for Prado?

Hi. Many seem hard-core off-roader, but I'd like to know which model/brand tyre would be good for quiet driving on trac road.
As we're driving on asphalt more than 90% of time, slippery, noise and durability become more important than off-roadbility.

I researched a bit and found Pirelli Scorpion ATR model looks okay though, what do you think?

    Hey mate,

I can't comment on the Pirellis but I can recommend the Dunlop AT3's. Not quite as rigid as say the D694's offroad but are certainly very good on the road and they never let me down off the road either. They're worth considering IMO.

    Cheers,

      I've got a new spare tyre - AT20,
      Can I mix AT3s and an AT20 ?
Because it's the 4wd, it's not a good idea to mix different brand/model, right?
      My current AT20 tyres doesn't last long ! I drove only 34000km.

If the pirellis are the same size leaving the spare at20 on the back for emergancies is fine, the ATR 's are quite and good offroad.
Don't forget to put your location in as per the rules also read through the threads in "Tyres" their is a heap of info.

I put a set of these on, http://www.yokohama.com.au/ourtyres/tyre.aspx?tyreid=71
More tread depth than the originals and quiet on the road.

            Hwang,

As hutch said you can run any brand of tyre you so desire as long as they're all the same size. If you get really stuck you could try an Dunlop AT3, Pirelli ATR, Cooper ATR, MT ATZ on each corner if you want! Sorry my stupid sense of humour is coming out again!

Most of the guys running the AT20's have been trying to wear them out quickly only to get 50,000+ kms out of them... You must have got a bad batch.

The AT3's are noisy at all really, can only hear them if you really listen for them, I never notice the noise at all to be honest. I guess it all depends on your budget too.

            Cheers,

              Thanks for the info.

I'll check the dealer tomorrow though, I guess the price of japanese tyres recently increased alot due to strong JPY and weak AUD. When I got quote for a dunlop AT20, each tyre cost around $350.

I had a set of MAXXIS - be warned, they are VERY NOISY! Now have Dunlop AT20s; not as good off road, but much quieter on the black top.

                  Re: quiet tyre for Prado?

I had a set of Coopers ATR's for 80,000 km on my old Patrol & they were quiet. They are a good compromise tyre given your 90% on road use, the problem is the 10% & not getting stuck because of using a total highway tyre. It will come down to what you are happy to live with. I too have the grandtreks as road tyres and whilst they are quiet, they are more than half worn with only 23,000 kms on them with rotating every 5,000 km and balancing every 10,000. (luckily the 2nd set of Coopers STs handle all off road trips)
Wherever you go..there you are, it's just more comfortable getting there in the Prado....

                    Re: quiet tyre for Prado?

I called a local Jax tyre shop and he quoted a BF Goodrich one (265/65/17) for near $295.

I think I should get a pair of the BF one and an AT20. AT20 will be worn out quicker so I can change another pair of BF later. It makes more economical than trading it in .

                      Re: quiet tyre for Prado?

Just fitted a set of Yokohama Geolandar AT-S and they have no noticable road noise coming through. Searching the net they came up pretty high in this caterory in comparisons against many other AT tyres. They seem a nice compromise of off road ability with on road comfort. I have really only driven them on the road since fitting but find them SIGNIFICANTLY superior to the old AT20's. Even managed to hit a few deep (invisible) puddles at 80+ km/h during the recent storms and they held together very well. Scared the crap out of me but I am glad that didn't happen in the Gradntreks. May not be typing this.

                        Re: quiet tyre for Prado?

                        Hi mate,

I've been running the Perelli Scorpion ATR's now for the last 10 months. More than happy with them, can't say I noticed any increase in noise at the time unless I got use to them quickly, and I switched from the OEM grandtreks.

When I got mine fitted I had to increase to the 265/70 R17 instead of 265/65 R17 which is the original size. Appartently Perelli don't bring in the 65 profile into Oz as standard (or so I was told at the time I got mine) and there would of been a 2 month wait. Difference to the speedo was about 5 klm increase ie. showing 100klm on speedo and doing 106 klm according to the gps.

I didn't have any issues fitting them either on the standard suspension with no scrubbing.

Now, my question is what danger of damage do I run the risk of running the original Grandtrek as a spare since I increased in profile from a 65 to a 70 series for the Perellis?

                        Cheers

While you might get away with in an emergency the commonly accepted wisdom is don't do it.
Get a 70 series spare. You can bet if you do carry the 65 series as a spare that one day you will get caught out.

The size 65R is available in Australia. http://www.pirelli.com.au/web/catalog/P ... orpion_ATR

I was told that I should have exact size tyre otherwise the diff will be broken. Can I ask what year of prado do you drive?
