    Re: Advice on upgrading rims/tyres

    gday marshallarts

in regards to your speed v revs with the change of tyre size it dosn't change what your speedo shows in regards to revs as the speedo takes the reading from the gearbox before the tyres, so what changing your tyre diameter dose to your speedo reading is make it false, most people use there gps or odometer check on freeways to see how accurate the speedo is after a change for example on my old triton i went from standard (dunno size) to 31inch tyres and this made my speedo out by 10% so when my speedo read 100kmph i was actually doing 110kmph which meant that i was travelling faster then i thought and lucky not to be caught speeding before i found out

    hope this helps (makes sense)

        Re: Advice on upgrading rims/tyres

Increasing the width of your rim/tyre will put extra stresses on your wheel bearings/hubs. I thought that the hubs are the same on all 120 prados and it was just the trim/wheels that were different between the GX and GXLs.

If you were to go to a larger wheel tyre combo you will notice an increase in fuel consumption and a drop off in power from what you have now. I increased my 265/60/17 tyres to a 265/70/17 and fuel economy went up .5l and there was a noticeable drop off in driveability with the auto (1kz motor not d4d) particularly around the 80k mark where it is somewhat between ratios.
Thanks for that and apologies for the late reply. As per your reply, I haven't noticed a decrease in power between 80-90kph, probably because the car spends its life as a tug vehicle, but there has been a slight increase in fuel consumption. Fitting the wider BFGs has been worth it, not just for ride but also for safety. The vehicle's cornering ability wihout the 'van in tow has improved, it brakes better, the ride is comfortable and I have more confidence in its handling with a caravan in tow and the additional cargo that we carry. By the way, I also fitted Bilstein shockies and I believe they too have made a huge difference off-road.

I admit to some concern about the extra stresses the new rim/tyre combination has added to the wheel bearings & hubs. Something I will have to live with, but certainly I will keep an eye on them. Let's hope they don't fail in the desert!

        Cheers,

          Re: Advice on upgrading rims/tyres

I don't see how upgrading a GX/Standard wheel to GXL spec wheel and tyre will affect the stresses on the bearings when a GXL and higher grade Prados are running the wider wheels ???

                  Hey all.

I've searched the whole forum regarding the possibility of changing the 120 GX 6" rims with the GXL 7.5" rims or their equivalent. I've found mention of people who have done it without any problems.

However, before I go and fork out money for rims and tires, I want to be certain that they will fit.

Looking at the offsets and wheel sizes, I get the following results:

GX 6" with offset 15, GXL 7.5" with offset 30

With the 7.5", the wheel will extend further in towards the suspension/body by 34mm, whilst it will extend further out towards the fender by 4 mm.

The 4mm towards the fender is great, might not need flares after all.

However, losing 34mm inner clearance sounds a bit much.

Lets say Cooper STT or Baja MTZ 265/70R17 tires are fitted. I have a 2" lift fitted. Are these going to cause issues in a 2006 GX?

                  Thanks,

                  Jeff

My GX has had the wheel change done with out any problems now running 265/65/17 MAXIS AT,the 120 series has a dual placard for both wheel/tyre size.
The wheels /tryes don't rub remembering that there is no differents between a GX/standard and a GXL except flares. They could do with some flexy flares or similar to stop the mud spray[i wish toyota made the 90 s RV flares like i had on my old 90s prado that could fit 120s
                    some lazy pic

                      Hi guys,
Next week I am fitting new 17x7.5 wheels with coopers AT3 275/70/17 with a 40mm Ironman lift, and looking at at a few posts regarding tyre rubbing, I am hopping I don't have to much trouble

                      Cheers, Matt

Before you get to carried away with 265/70R/17's on GX have a look at Cooper STT's in a 245/70R/17. I have these fitted on my 2004 GX on GXL rims and they where fantastic. As Samo said earlier the car felt more stable on the road with the wider foot print and the tyres sat just inside/level with the guards. Couple with OME susupension and that thing was an awasome car.

                          Hey guys,

Thanks for an interesting thread. I have a '03 GX with the stock tyres, it handles crap when cornering round roundabouts in Canberra, have had the car slide a bit. Mid next year i will be looking at upgrading the tyres. I have considered upgrading to 265/65/17 with GXL rims but due to only having a 2.7ltr petrol motor, think that this will be a big ask for such a small motor. Was going to also look at going to 235/70/17, this way i get to keep my current rims and the power loss shouldn't be that bad with the smaller motor. I was thinking about upgrading to 245/65/17, this is not much bigger then the 235's as well but believe that i would need to change rims.

I am also planning on installing a 40-52mm lift and install Poly-air bags for the rear. I will be heading for a 2week holiday in Tassie next Oct and the current tyres wont last the distance. They handled fraser island reasonibly well and didn't get stuck in the sand.

                          Thanks,

                          Paul

                            Paul,

The 245/70R17 is the closest size to the 265/65R17 as per the GXL and is the standard size on the later Standard model. If you look at different tyres and look for the ones with the squarer shoulders you will be able to get the widest footprint possible. BFG AT is one of the squarer ones.
